New Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt completed his first recruiting class on Tuesday by signing Shakir Smith of Tucson.

Smith is a 6-foot-1 shooting guard.

"We sent the word out to many of our friends, whether they were basketball coaches or AAU coaches, that we have a scholarship available and in the event there is somebody out there that can impact this program, we were interested," Shyatt said.

Smith's only scholarship offers came from Division II and Division III schools as well as the junior college ranks.

"All coaches need a long, lanky shooter, and Shakir is a long, lanky shooter," Shyatt said. "He has played the point, but he's definitely what you call a shooting guard. He would be a waste if you put the ball in his hand too often because he's a guy you need to get open. He has ridiculous range."
