USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo pointed to Team USA’s abundance of star guards and forwards when discussing the talent level of a potential 19-man roster.

"First of all, we are really loaded in the backcourt and the small forward spots. We're just very, very talented there," Colangelo said. "There is a shortage of talented big men that exist in our country today on the pro level, even on the college level."

Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, and Chris Paul are expected to headline the Team USA backcourt, while LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony vie for minutes at small forward. Anthony started at power forward for the US in 2008.

"Make no mistake about it, there'll be some tremendous players who won't be on the 12,” Colangelo said.”That's the competition. This is the reality of being in the position we're in."

Colangelo mentioned Spain first when asked about Team USA’s competition, but hinted he may choose not to stockpile on big men to defend the Spanish frontcourt, which features Lakers All-Star Pau Gasol, Grizzlies center Marc Gasol, and Thunder forward Serge Ibaka.

"People would say Spain, you have to look at their makeup and their talent, and how do we match up with them? It's more about how they match up with us, but I'm just stating,” Colangelo said. “We look at Spain, Argentina, Brazil, France … those are the teams you are hearing the most about, who may be real competition."
