Rick Majerus has retired because of a serious heart condition.

Majerus already had taken a leave of absence this season from Saint Louis to address his health issues.

On Friday afternoon, the school announced that he would be unable to return to coaching at any point.

“Coach Majerus’ health is of the utmost importance, and our thoughts and prayers are with him as he faces his challenges,” Saint Louis athletics director Chris May said in a statement. “We are thankful for Rick’s efforts as he succeeded by all accounts as our head men’s basketball coach. This is an exciting season for the program, and we think it is important to communicate, with transparency, to the student-athletes, staff and our loyal fans that Rick will not be returning. Majerus remains in California to deal with the problem."

Majerus retires with a 517-216 record in 25 years as a head coach at Marquette, Ball State, Utah and Saint Louis.
