Wesley Johnson sees himself signing a long-term contract with the Phoenix Suns before next season.

The Suns declined the 2013-14 option on Johnson’s contract, which means he will become a free agent on July 1.

“I think this is a longtime place for me,” Johnson said. “I told them from the jump that I wanted to be here. We’ll see how it plays out in July.”

Johnson has flourished since moving into the starting lineup, averaging 14.3 points on 49 percent shooting in four games.

“I’m just trying to live up to my expectations for myself,” Johnson said. “Being drafted No. 4 is a stigma that you get tagged with, but I just try to live up to being the player and person that I wanted to be when I played basketball when I was younger. I really have that mind-set that I want to be one of the greatest, so I am going to keep going.”
