The Philadelphia 76ers weren't interested in doing a trade last season of Michael Carter-Williams for Brandon Knight straight-up.

Jason Kidd felt he could mold Carter-Williams and was under contract for two more seasons at a total of $5.5 million.

Knight was set to be a restricted free agent and the Milwaukee Bucks couldn't re-sign both him and Khris Middleton, along with a big man.

"When we made the decision to trade Brandon, it gave us the opportunity to not only look at [Carter-Williams] but also flexibility going into the summer," Kidd said earlier this season. "At that point, we had to figure out which one we could move and had the opportunity to get something in return."

The Bucks and 76ers had a stalemate on their talks but that broke when the Phoenix Suns entered the picture as they owned the Los Angeles Lakers' pick.

The picks the Suns acquired from the Miami Heat for Goran Dragic motivated them to part with the Lakers' pick.
