A fresh, free-to-play daily sports puzzle is making waves among fans of the NFL, NBA, and MLB: The Winfield Game. If you love guessing rosters, recalling past seasons, or simply showing off your sports memory, this one’s for you.

What is The Winfield Game?

The Winfield Game challenges players to identify a mystery All-Star or Pro Bowler — drawn from the NBA, NFL, or MLB — in 10 guesses or fewer. Each day brings a new “Answer Player” and involves a lot of strategy to get to that answer in as few guesses as possible.

Once you submit a guess, the game reveals which aspects of your guess match the mystery athlete — giving feedback on: which teams or cities they played for, their active decades, what position they played, and even awards or honors like MVP, Hall-of-Fame, All-Pro / All-NBA, or Gold Glove.

Because it spans multiple major leagues and eras — from vintage stars to modern-day legends — it’s equally appealing to fans who remember ’90s rosters or those who follow today’s games religiously.

Strategy & Why It’s So Addictive

Part of the fun in The Winfield Game is that the best guesses aren’t always the obvious ones. Smart players use “journeyman” athletes — those who played for many teams across different eras — to maximize feedback early and narrow down the pool faster. For instance, players like Garrett Temple and Ryan Fitzpatrick are popular opening guesses, because their long, multi-team (or multi-decade) careers often yield valuable clues right off the bat.

In the example below, Garrett Temple was an excellent starting guess that provided matches on several cities and the answer’s decade with the most games played. Because Toronto doesn’t have a football team, you even know that you’re targeting a baseball player. A great starting guess allows you to more quickly refine your guesses.

After a few guesses, you start getting a sense of how to filter — what city, decade, position or honor to chase. The “aha” moment when you narrow it down to the real answer is what keeps people coming back every morning.

Enter the Group Leaderboards: Play with Friends, Colleagues, or Community

What elevates The Winfield Game beyond a solo trivia exercise is the newly-launched Group Leaderboards feature. Now, users can create or join groups — whether with friends, coworkers, fantasy-league buddies, or even a public group for a podcast or fandom community.

Within each group, there are three leaderboards:

Today’s Score — who guessed today’s player in the fewest attempts

Best Average Score — ranked by each player’s average over all games played

Longest Streak — for those who never miss a day

It’s a perfect mix of friendly competition, nostalgia, and community — great for fantasy leagues, groups of friends, or anybody looking to bond over shared sports knowledge.
