Arturs Zagars On NBA Radar After World Cup

Sep 10, 2023 9:30 AM

Latvia was a surprise performer at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. As a big part of that success, Latvian point guard Arturs Zagars is popping up on the radar of some NBA teams.

In the fifth-place game against Lithuania, Zagars set a World Cup record with 17 assists. That capped a strong tournament for the 6-foot-3 point guard, where he averaged 12.4 points and 7.4 assists per game.

The 23-year-old is a free agent after playing for Nevezis in Latvia last season. He's now drawing interest from several top EuroLeague clubs, as well as some NBA teams. Latvian teammate and NBA veteran Davis Bertans thinks Zagars is ready to play in the NBA.

"I think it's a fair shot. It's all about timing, chance, and opportunity. Everything can happen if you end up at the right place at the right time. He has all the tools to do it," Bertans said of Zagars' NBA potential.

Aug 10, 2023 8:56 AM

On Wednesday, news came out of Europe that Kristaps Porzingis might potentially miss the 2023 FIBA World Cup due to a foot injury. The Latvian Basketball association denied that this is the case in a tweet on Thursday.

"There has been information that questions the participation of Kristaps Porzingis in the FIBA World Cup. LBS denies this information. Both the players' individual preparation plans and the team's overall training process are ongoing. The line-up for the match against the Dominican Republic will be announced on August 12," was tweeted by the Latvian Basketball association.

The previous reports of an injury had said that Latvia and the Boston Celtics would work together on an injury management and participation plan for Porzingis. Boston acquired the veteran big man in a three-team trade this summer, and subsequently signed Porzingis to a two-year, $60 million extension.
