Injury Means Team USA Likely To Cut Evans

Jul 25, 2010 10:12 AM

Tyreke Evans, the NBA's reigning Rookie of the Year, sprained his ankle and missed Team USA's final three practices and Saturday's game in Las Vegas.

Evans said Friday that because of the injury he didn't expect to survive the team's impending cut and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo appears to agree.

Colangelo said that Evans being cut is "pretty obvious."

"It was a bad break for him," Colangelo said of Evans. "He's a terrific kid. He's certainly part of our group and our team. We'll be looking at him down the road (in future summers) in all probability."

Team USA Will Cut 4-5 Players After Vegas

Jul 24, 2010 7:58 AM

USA Basketball's training camp in Las Vegas will end Saturday night with an intrasquad game at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The roster will be trimmed sometime after that before Team USA reconvenes in New York next month for the World Championships to be held in Turkey Aug. 28-Sept. 12.

"We have time on our side in terms of selection," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Friday.

"We're still talking about 14 or 15 going to New York. Names could change a little bit based on today and based on what we see tomorrow night, because we're giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. If there are any close calls we may even take an extra guy. We'll see."

LeBron, Wade To Visit Team USA

Jul 22, 2010 7:34 AM

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were scheduled to arrive on Wednesday night in Las Vegas, where Team USA is holding a minicamp in preparation for the 2010 World Championships.

James and Wade declined to play for Team USA this summer, but they remain on the roster and in the mix to play for the 2012 Olympic team.

"LeBron and D-Wade are coming in tonight, and Chris Paul  is here. But we had invited all of our guys to stop in, both here and in New York [for training camp Aug. 9-15]," Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo said. "That's all there is to it. We don't have any plan for them.

"[A meeting with the team] may happen and it may not, but we wanted them around, and they're here," Colangelo said. "So that's really it."

Amar'e Understands Why Knicks Removed Him From National Team

Jul 21, 2010 2:48 PM

Amar'e Stoudemire appreciates the Knicks' position in removing him from this summer's national team.

"I understand the New York Knicks' concern, also wanting to make sure I'm totally healthy for next season," Stoudemire said. "I'm looking forward to having a big year with the Knicks organization, so I understand both sides."

If a team cannot obtain insurance on a player, that team can stop the player from participating in events during the off-season.

"He had to pull out because he couldn't get insurance on his knees. So, he's not able to play," Mike D'Antoni said. "I don't know if his [future USA Basketball] status has changed or not. I have no idea. I hate it for him, but it's business."
