Juan Carlos Navarro Out Indefinitely With Foot Injury

Jul 31, 2012 11:30 PM

Juan Carlos Navarro sustained a foot injury during Spain's tournament-opening win over China on Sunday.

"It was very strong and all of a sudden,'' Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said. "It is nothing related with his former problems. It is a probably a new injury. It is plantar fasciitis, but it is probably in a different place [within the foot].

"He couldn't play. I don't know how many games he will miss.''

Without Navarro, Spain rallied behind Pau Gasol for an 82-70 win over Australia on Tuesday.

"He's not obviously too happy right now because he's injured and he couldn't play today and we don't know exactly when he's going to be able to play,'' said Gasol. "It's not the easiest situation for an athlete to go through during an Olympics.''

Valanciunas Benched Because Of Foul Trouble, Defensive Effort Against Argentina

Jul 31, 2012 10:55 AM

Jonas Valanciunas played just 14 minutes in Lithuania’s 102-79 preliminary round loss to Argentina on Monday.

“I didn’t play well,” said Valanciunas, who was benched for committing three early fouls and failing to contain Luis Scola. “I played not my best game, and our coach is coaching to win, not give me [playing] time.”

Scola scored a game-high 32 points for Argentina.

“We failed defensively,” Lithuanian coach Kestutis Kemzura said without pointing the finger directly at Valanciunas. “We did not do a good job of communicating.”

Scola cautioned against reading anything at all into Valanciunas’ first game at the London Olympics.

“He has a lot of potential,” said Scola. “I don’t think you can look at this game and say it was a good test for him, or that you can judge him on this one game. They didn’t play well. We did.”

Deng Played Nearly Every Minute Of Great Britain's Olympic Opener Against Russia

Jul 30, 2012 10:39 AM

Luol Deng played all but 63 seconds of Great Britain’s 95-75 loss to Russia on Sunday.

Deng is playing for Britain despite a torn ligament in his left wrist.

"The wrist is great," Deng said. "I'm not thinking about it. I'm just playing out there. These games are helping me. So far, I've had no trouble. For those who say I only drive right, I drove left a couple times (Sunday)."

Britain faces an uphill battle in its bid to escape the five-game preliminary round.

"We're the underdog, and it's definitely difficult," Deng said. "It's a different game. It's exhausting. It's definitely different than playing with Derrick (Rose). But it really helps my game also. I get to handle the ball, play pick-and-roll. Saying all that, I just try to do whatever I can to help us win."

Jul 29, 2012 10:42 PM

Nicolas Batum tweaked his back during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and scored just 7 points on 2-for-6 shooting against Team USA on Sunday.

"It was tough because I had a bad back. I tried to play with it, I tried everything," said Batum. "I hurt it during the Opening Ceremony, standing four or five hours in a row. I'm not used to that."

France trailed by just one at the end of the first quarter, 22-21. Team USA went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter to give themselves a cushion and were never seriously challenged the rest of the game.

Batum recently inked a four-year, $46 million contract with the Blazers.
