Deron Williams Open To Playing For Team USA At World Cup

Sep 10, 2012 11:49 PM

Deron Williams is interested in playing for Team USA at the 2014 World Cup.

''I'll be 32, so I'm not going to be too old,'' Williams said. ''(Jason) Kidd was 36 the last time we did it, so I could play two more essentially. But we'll see, we'll see what happens. Four years is a long ways off.''

Williams initially planned to play for the U.S. at the 2010 Worlds, a less glamorous event that basketball officials are attempting to strengthen.

''They're starting to try to put emphasis on it and make it more important,'' Williams said. ''It's definitely important. I think the world championship is great. It's not the Olympics, but it is a big deal.''

Sep 6, 2012 12:18 PM

Manu Ginobili may continue playing for Argentina.

The next major national team event is the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain in 2014.

"I never said I would continue, and I never said I would quit," Ginobili said.

"There are still two years, it's a long time.

"I don't know how I will be and everything will depend on that.

"But I do know that I will be 37 and it's not the same at that age as another age."

Argentina lost to Russia in the Bronze Medal Game.

Wiggins Embraces Role As Pillar Of Canadian National Team

Sep 5, 2012 11:11 PM

Andrew Wiggins is seen as the future of the Canadian national team.

"I think he takes a lot of pride in that because that's where he's from," Wiggins' AAU coach Mike George said. "He embraces the opportunity and challenge and takes it on. He's got a very humble spirit about him. If you know his dad and his mom, they are the most humble people you will ever meet. A lot of that is inherited from his parents and his brothers.

"It's a lot of pressure but I don't think he thinks about it too much. He's just a young kid who enjoys playing the game. If he could just play pickup five-on-five the rest of his life he'd be happy because he loves the game. Because of that he doesn't feel the pressure."

Wiggins, the clear-cut number one player in the class of 2014, may reclassify to the class of 2013.

"I'll say this as my statement on his recruitment, these college coaches need to stop assuming and take a chance and recruit him," George said. "A lot of people assume that he's going to Florida State because of his parents or Kentucky or whatever because it's presented like that in the media. All of these assumptions are made but it has never come out of his mouth.

"These other coaches aren't even trying."

Jerry Colangelo To Continue As Chairman Of USA Basketball Through 2016

Sep 1, 2012 10:29 AM

Jerry Colangelo will remain chairman of USA Basketball through the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

"I've decided I'm going to continue," Colangelo told USA TODAY Sports. "I'm committed to our organization during this transition period. I want to make sure, as good as things are, that once the baton is handed over to someone it's in even better shape. That's the plan for these next four years."

Colangelo said the decision was not impacted by FIBA's ruling to continue making the Olympics open to all ages.

"It didn't have anything to do with my willingness to continue," he said. "I've been encouraged to continue, and if somebody didn't want me there, it would take about three seconds for me to walk."

Colangelo must still be nominated for a spot on the board of directors for the 2013-16 quadrennial which is a formality.
