Hawks, Bulls, Kings Preparing To Use Cap Space For Trades Of Bad Contracts

Jun 28, 2018 8:27 PM

The Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings have signaled they plan on using their prized cap space to take on bad salary and extra draft picks. Teams could be looking to decrease their luxury tax bill or to create cap space.

The decision from the Kings is interesting considering they don't own their first round draft pick this season as part of their trade with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Hawks and Bulls are embarking on multi-year rebuilds.

Lakers Trying To Acquire Future First Round Pick

Jun 27, 2018 1:04 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers have been looking to acquire a future first round pick on the trade market in recent days. The Lakers would take on 18-19 salary in exchange for a pick as they have cap space.

The pick could be used to improve a prospective trade opportunity to acquire Kawhi Leonard.

The San Antonio Spurs haven't ruled out a trade of Leonard to the Lakers, but they are unlikely to be motivated to agree upon a deal unless they have extracted every possible asset.

Proposal To Flip Start Of Free Agency, Draft Gaining Momentum

Jun 26, 2018 2:20 PM

The Houston Rockets proposed to the NBA's competition committee that the league flips the draft and free agency.

Members of the Boston Celtics' front office have also been for the change to the calendar.

The NFL conducts their free agency period before the draft.

The idea has gained some momentum with support from a few prominent general managers.

"As a staff, we have been kicking this around for a couple of summers now," says Gersson Rosas, the Rockets' executive vice president of basketball operations, who presented the idea to representatives from the league's 30 teams at a meeting in Chicago ahead of May's draft lottery. "Is there a better way?"

Mavericks Chose Sending FRP To Hawks Over Taking On Kent Bazemore's Contract

Jun 22, 2018 5:57 PM

The Dallas Mavericks had the option to swap Wesley Matthews for Kent Bazemore instead of sending a future first round pick to the Atlanta Hawks in their draft night trade.

Bazemore is owed $18.1 million in 18-19 and $19.27 million in 19-20 compared to just $18.6 million in total to Wesley Matthews.

The Mavericks found that price to be too high and instead send a pick to the Hawks that is top-5 protected in each of the next two seasons, top-3 in 2021 and 2022, and unprotected in 2023.

Bulls Had Interest In Trading Up For Marvin Bagley III, Jaren Jackson

Jun 22, 2018 12:01 PM

The Chicago Bulls stayed at No. 7 in the 2018 NBA Draft and selected Wendell Carter Jr.

But the Bulls tried to trade up for Marvin Bagley III and Jaren Jackson.

Sources say the Bulls' efforts never got close. The Bulls did discuss trades with both the Atlanta Hawks at No. 3 and Memphis Grizzlies at No. 4.

The Bulls didn't want to sacrifice future first round picks to move up, or take on the contract of Chandler Parsons.

The Bulls privately had hoped the Kings would become enamored with Michael Porter Jr., dropping Bagley to a slot from which the Bulls could possibly trade up and acquire Bagley.

Hawks Pulled Out Of Trade With Bucks After Donte DiVincenzo Pick Leaked

Jun 22, 2018 11:55 AM

Travis Schlenk told 95.7 The Game in San Francisco on Friday that the Atlanta Hawks had a deal in place to acquire the No. 17 pick from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for a draft pick.

But Schlenk ended up not executing the trade after it leaked that the Bucks were going to take Donte DiVincenzo instead of Kevin Huerter.

"Last night, for instance, we had the 19th pick and we're coming down and we're actually talking to Milwaukee on the 17th pick, talking about trading up to get a guy we like," Schlenk said. "There's were a couple of guys we felt really good about on the 19th pick, obviously Kevin [Huerter] was one of them, and it leaked who Milwaukee was going to take.

"So, all of a sudden, we were able to pull back out of that deal and keep the draft pick instead of packaging picks to move up because we knew that two guys on the board we felt really good about and only one team in between us so that was beneficial to us last night."

Donnie Nelson Advocated For Luka Doncic As He Did Giannis Antetokounmpo In 2013

Jun 22, 2018 9:23 AM

The Dallas Mavericks traded up to select Luka Doncic on draft night, which could have been influenced by their decision not to remain in their draft slot in 2013 to select Giannis Antetokounmpo.

According to Tim MacMahon, the last time Donnie Nelson advocated to Mark Cuban to trade up for a player prior to Doncic, it was for Antetokounmpo.

"I think the fact that Donnie Nelson was absolutely, 100 percent sold that this is the guy we need to get, that spoke loudly to Cuban," said MacMahon. "Because the last time Donnie Nelson highly recommended a European prospect, Cuban said 'Nah...'

"They drafted his younger brother (Kostas Antetokounmpo) tonight.

"In 2013, the Mavericks had their first lottery pick in forever and Donnie Nelson said 'Look, this Greek kid is going to be the best player in this draft. We should take him. We should take him.'

"Cuban said 'Nah... We need cap space. Let's trade down. Let's trade down'

"Traded down a couple times and ended up with Shane Larkin."

MacMahon added that he first heard about the Mavericks' interest in Antetokounmpo soon after the draft.
