A plan to select Luka Doncic with the #1 pick and make a run at signing Clint Capela that offseason was proposed to the Phoenix Suns in the lead-up to the 2018 NBA Draft, tweeted Marc Stein of The New York Times.

The team had also hired Doncic's national team coach Igor Kokoskov before the draft.

James Wiseman Suspended For 12 Games, Will Return Jan. 12

Nov 20, 2019 7:12 PM

James Wiseman has been suspended for 12 games by the NCAA and will return on Jan. 12.

Memphis announced that it will appeal the NCAA's decision based on "case precedent, the circumstances of this case and other mitigating factors."

"We expect a more fair and equitable resolution, and we will exhaust all avenues on James' behalf. James will not compete in this evening's contest," the school said in a statement.

Wiseman's mother accepted $11,500 from Penny Hardaway in the summer of 2017.

James Wiseman Unlikely To Have Draft Stock Significantly Impacted If He's Out For 19-20

Nov 15, 2019 2:26 PM

James Wiseman could be forced to sit out the remainder of his freshman season at Memphis due to eligibility issues, but NBA executives don't believe it will have a dramatic impact on his draft stock.

“Will him sitting the year impact him a spot or two? Maybe,” one high-ranking team official said. “But it isn’t impacting his financial base. He is known as a talent.”

Wiseman is widely considered the best big man in 2020 NBA Draft and has been a candidate to be selected first overall.

Sources tell The Athletic that Memphis is optimistic Wiseman will miss fewer than nine games. Wiseman intends to re-file his lawsuit against the NCAA and Memphis if his season is not saved.

James Wiseman Withdraws Lawsuit, Waits For NCAA Ruling

Nov 14, 2019 11:14 AM

James Wiseman has withdrawn his lawsuit against Memphis and the NCAA. Wiseman is now awaiting a resolution from the NCAA.

Wiseman is a freshman at Memphis and a candidate to be the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Wiseman has been ruled ineligible for receiving improper benefits from Penny Hardaway before Hardaway was hired as head coach. Memphis has supported Wiseman's suit even while named as a defendant. The suit claims Wiseman didn't know about the money given to his family in the summer of 2017 to help with moving expenses.

Red Auerbach Overruled Boston's Front Office On Selecting Tony Parker In 2001 Draft

Nov 11, 2019 11:22 AM

The Boston Celtics were set to draft Tony Parker in the 2001 NBA Draft until Red Auerbach overruled brand-new general manager Chris Wallace.

Auerbach was 84 at the time and remained president and vice chairman. Auerbach insisted the Celtics instead select Joe Forte at No. 21, several league executives confirmed recently.

Auerbach was skeptical of European point guards and he also had scouted Forte dating back to high school at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland.

The San Antonio Spurs knew Parker had a good workout for the Celtics and they feared Boston might select him with one of their three picks in the top-21. San Antonio selected Parker with the 28th overall pick.

Teams Have Begun To Devalue 'Pure Upside' Prospects In Draft

Nov 5, 2019 9:57 AM

NBA teams have begun to shift away from pure upside players in the draft.

A player like Nassir Little fell last June despite having the tools of a typical lottery pick.

"Teams appear to be relying more on collegiate production and maturity as opposed to pure upside plays that often characterized previous drafts," writes ESPN's Mike Schmitz.

Teams are valuing lower-risk prospects with a definable role more than ever.

"The days of a Thon Maker or Georgios Papagiannis going in the lottery seem to be behind us for now."

Point Guards 'Far And Away The Strength' Of 2020 NBA Draft Class

Nov 5, 2019 9:43 AM

Point guard is considered "far and away the strength" of the 2020 NBA Draft class, according to ESPN's Mike Schmitz.

Nine of ESPN's top-20 prospect can be considered point guards, while Anthony Edwards makes 10 as he is expected to frequently handle the ball at Georgia.

Cole Anthony, LaMelo Ball, RJ Hampton, Theo Maledon and Nico Mannion headline the point guards.

Center is considered a weak point with James Wiseman the only prospect at the position in ESPN's top-10.
