Damian Lillard Will Take Time To Return, Won't Play If Blazers Aren't Pushing For Playoffs

Jan 22, 2022 5:53 PM

Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard met with the media for the first time since undergoing abdominal surgery. Lillard said he's feeling good after the surgery but is in "no rush" to get back on the court. He'll take his time before the returning.

The Blazers star said the injury has been bothering him for years. Lillard said he first felt discomfort during training camp in 2015. He said the abdominal tightness and pain would come and go but got more persistent as the years went along. Lillard said conversations at the Olympics with Jrue Holiday, who had a similar injury, helped him decide to get surgery.

As for his return, Lillard said he'll take his time and make sure he's right before re-taking the court. The Trail Blazers place in the standings when he's cleared will also factor in.

"I mean, if we are going to play for a draft pick, it wouldn’t make sense for me … because I’m not going to play for no draft pick. I’m just not capable of that," Lillard said. "So, it would be best if that was what we were doing, or what was decided, then it wouldn’t make sense for me to play."

Bradley Beal: We're Going In The Right Direction, But Still Have Improvements To Make

Jan 23, 2022 1:23 PM

Bradley Beal reaffirmed he's not asking to leave the Washington Wizards in the near future. Beal said the Wizards are "going in the right direction, but still have a lot of improvements to make".

In a wide-ranging podcast appearance, Beal spoke of his commitment to Washington as being something he's proud of. He also said things need to continue to improve if he's to stay long-term. Beal also realizes he's got something special as the franchise centerpiece for the Wizards.

“Honestly, realizing that a franchise is willing to build around you. It’s not always like that everywhere. Like, if I go somewhere else, they’re just not going to build around you. They’ll build around what they have," Beal said. "There’s nothing absolutely nothing wrong with that, but if I have the chance to create my own legacy and make it work here with the team that drafted me, then why not give it a shot? It it works, it works, If it doesn’t, I can say ‘At least I tried.’ That’s just who I am. That’s my blessing and curse, my loyalty. We’re transitioning, we’re going in the right direction, but we still have a lot of improvements to make.”

Lauri Markkanen Suffers Significant Ankle Sprain

Jan 23, 2022 8:15 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers are prepared to be without starting forward Lauri Markkanen for a while. Markkanen suffered what is believed to be a high ankle sprain in his right leg.

Markkanen contested a drive by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the second quarter of Cleveland's win over Oklahoma City on Saturday night. Markkanen landed awkwardly and stayed on the floor for a while. Eventually, the big man was helped from the floor.

In his first season with the Cavs, Markkanen has averaged 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. His floor-spacing ability has been a key to Cleveland's three-big lineup featuring Jarrett Allen and rookie sensation Evan Mobley.

Malcolm Brogdon Out 10 Days With Achilles Soreness

Jan 23, 2022 7:56 AM

The Indiana Pacers injury-plagued season continues to get even more difficult. Starting point guard Malcolm Brogdon was shut for at least 10 days to deal with soreness in his right Achilles.

Brogdon has missed considerable time over the last month. He was out for nine straight games in late-December into early-January. He's only been able to play in three of the Pacers last 17 games overall.

Indiana is also without fellow starters Domantas Sabonis, Myles Turner and Caris LeVert, as well as sixth-man T.J. McConnell. In addition, T.J. Warren has yet to play this season as he rehabs from a foot injury. All of the absences have seen the Pacers tumble to 13th in the Eastern Conference, where they are six games out of the final spot in the Play-In tournament.

Didi Louzada Out Indefinitely After Torn Medial Meniscus

Jan 23, 2022 3:38 PM

New Orleans Pelicans guard Didi Louzada's frustrating season took another turn for the worse on Saturday. While playing with the Birmingham Squadron of the G League, Louzada tore the medial meniscus in his left knee. New Orleans announced Louzada will be out indefinitely.

Louzada has played in just two games with the Pelicans this season. In late-November, Louzada was suspended for 25 games due to violating the NBA/NBPA's anti-drug policy. Louzada tested positive for two different performance enhancing drugs.

That suspension ended recently and Louzada was assigned to the Squadron to ramp back up to rejoining the Pelicans. Now, it's unknown when that return to playing in the NBA will happen.
