Celtics Give Gordon Hayward Coaching Project During Rehab

Oct 27, 2017 9:09 AM

Gordon Hayward will take on a coaching role as he recovers from his lower leg injury. Hayward was injured in his first game with the Boston Celtics and the assignment is intended to keep him engaged.

“He’s going to do some different things for us,” Brad Steven said. “Yeah, we’ll keep him occupied. We’ve got a couple of projects that we’ll throw at him, things he can do from home.”

Asked if it would be video work, Stevens said, “No, we are just going to throw him different assignments that we’re working on as a staff, just to keep him engaged.”

As for what those assignments may be, Stevens said, “I just have a couple I have in mind. I don’t want to get too specific or deep on it. (It’s) just so he can continue to stay engaged and give some of our younger players his insight.”

Kyrie Irving Had Interest In Knicks Since They're 'Close To Home'

Oct 26, 2017 9:56 AM

Kyrie Irving reiterated he had genuine interest in being traded to the New York Knicks despite their current status as a rebuilding franchise.

Irving also had interest in the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and ultimately was traded to the Boston Celtics.

“It’s pretty easy, man,” Irving said. “They were on the list for a reason. They were close to home. That’s about it.”

“Any time a great player in this league has you on their list, you got to be happy about it,” Jeff Hornacek said.

“I saw (Irving was interested in joining the Knicks) on Twitter,” Kristaps Porzingis said. “I wasn’t even paying too much attention to my own trade talks — and even less to other guys.”

Multiple Factors Led Cavaliers To Scrap Kyrie Irving Tribute Video

Oct 19, 2017 10:22 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers decided not to air a tribute video for Kyrie Irving during his return to Quicken Loans Arena on opening night. The Boston Celtics will only make one trip to Cleveland during the regular season.

Several Cavaliers' players were upset by the idea of showing a tribute to Irving during the game.

Team spokesman Tad Carper said at halftime Tuesday they weren’t going to air the tribute video because they couldn’t find a time that felt appropriate, especially following the injury to Gordon Hayward.

Dan Gilbert was also involved in the decision not to air the video.

Irving was booed by the Cleveland fans throughout the game.

Kyrie Irving's Father Had Issues With Cavaliers During Most Of Tenure

Oct 19, 2017 5:38 PM

Drederick Irving, father of Kyrie Irving, refused to give Randy Mims five one day while leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers' locker room. Mims is an employee of the Cavaliers and a lifelong friend of LeBron James.

Irving said his father believed they shouldn’t be “fraternizing with the enemy” when he was asked about the incident by James and whether there was something wrong.

"I could care less. You can write it," Irving told The Athletic when asked about the incident this week. "It's on you, kid. It's your validity, baby. It’s just my dad. It’s not me."

Drederick was often upset with the organization throughout Irving’s six years with the Cavaliers. There were concerns about the roster surrounding Irving before James' return, as well as coaching decisions and how the Cavaliers handled his health.

Gordon Hayward Unlikely To Return In 17-18

Oct 19, 2017 9:37 AM

Gordon Hayward underwent surgery to repair a dislocated left ankle and a fractured tibia in Boston on Wednesday night.

Hayward is unlikely to return during the 17-18 season, according to his agent Mark Bartelstein.

"We expect him to make a full recovery and return to his All-Star form," Bartelstein said.

"I was [at the hospital] for a minute last night and also again today for an hour or so. He's down," Brad Stevens said. "Obviously, there's a physical pain to it, but I think it's also doubled by the emotional pain of, you know, he put a lot of effort into trying to start this, his career, out well in Boston.

"But this is a setback; we're expecting a full recovery. And we know there are going to be a lot of tough days ahead on that recovery but, at the same time, hopefully he'll improve day to day. But it's been tough. It's been tough for him."

Hayward signed a four-year, $128 million contract with the Celtics in the offseason.
