Brad Stevens: Marcus Smart Doing 'Great' During Self-Isolation

Mar 28, 2020 12:44 PM

Brad Stevens said that Marcus Smart was in "great spirits" after testing positive for COVID-19, and added that he was proud of Smart for announcing his results to the larger public.

Smart, currently in self-isolation, is asymptomatic.

"I'm just happy that when he tested positive he continued to experience no symptoms and has felt great ever since. ... I'm proud of how he kinda took the initiative to tell people that he had it and that he felt good and that he got online and just continued to ask people to practice social distancing and self-isolation right now," said Stevens.

Stevens added that he believes the NBA canceling the game between the Jazz and the Thunder was a turning point for how the country looked at the virus.

"I think in a unique way that was a starting point for the whole country in recognizing that. I know a lot of people that have experienced symptoms or that ultimately -- throughout this NBA family -- that have gotten this. So I think it hit home well before that. But I do think that Wednesday night [when Gobert tested positive] will be something that we all remember and obviously the days following that as we entered this kind of new world."

Celtics Were Targeting Eventual Trade For Paul George Until Jayson Tatum's 2nd Workout

Mar 3, 2020 11:12 AM

When Markelle Fultz shot poorly in his second pre-draft workout with the Boston Celtics, Danny Ainge began exploring trades to move down from No. 1.

Sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer that the Celtics hoped to acquire a pick a few spots lower than No. 1 and other assets to flip in a separate trade for Paul George. The Indiana Pacers were in the process of trying to trade George, who was eventually dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder on the eve of 2017 free agency.

But Jayson Tatum worked out for a second time and the Celtics began targeting to him.

“You saw the change of heart,” said one league source familiar with Tatum’s second and final workout with Boston. “Danny was like ‘OK, we’re getting this kid,’ and a few days later they made the trade.”

Tatum has become an All-Star this season and is arguably already a better player than George considering the latter's injury history.

“We just felt that Jayson had a chance to be a very, very good player that would fit well into our culture,” Ainge said.
