Mikhail Prokhorov explained his willingness to shell out more than $100 million in player salaries for next season – a figure that will trigger an NBA-record luxury tax bill of about $80 million.
“When I bought the team, I promised to create a championship contender, a team worthy of Brooklyn,” said Prokhorov. “I’ll be proud when we win the championship. I am not a man of procedure. I am a man of results.”
Prokhorov reiterated his goal of winning a title by 2015.
“In the NBA, money, it’s important, but you can’t buy a championship only spending money. What’s most important is to put pieces together [for] a championship contender,” he said. “Frankly speaking, I’ll do whatever I can to reach the championship here in Brooklyn. It was the goal when I bought the NBA team. From inside, for me there is only one place and that’s first place.”
Jason Kidd spoke with Paul Pierce about coming to the Brooklyn Nets before taking the job as head coach.
Pierce talked about the process of how he convinced Kevin Garnett to approve a trade from the Boston Celtics to the Nets.
“It was a situation where [the Celtics] were going to make a move, and once the deal with the Clippers didn’t go through for [Garnett], it was like, the Celtics were trading me, Doc (Rivers) was leaving, so what was left for Kevin?” explained Pierce. “I talked to Jason Kidd, and he was warming me to the fact of coming to Brooklyn, then he started warming me to the fact that they were trying to get Kevin, too.
“That’s when I called Kevin and asked him what he thought about coming to Brooklyn, he immediately said, ‘Well, what pieces are they going to give up? Who is going to be left? Is it going to be possible for us to win a championship?’ He was excited when I talked to him after warming him up, just to have the opportunity to come and win a championship and be alongside a young prospect like Brook Lopez, who he can try to take to the next level. And once I warmed him up to that, he was all in for it.”
The Brooklyn Nets have requested waivers on D.J. White.
White was acquired from the Boston Celtics on July 12th in a trade that also netted Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry.
Over his five-year NBA career with Oklahoma City, Charlotte and Boston, White holds averages of 6.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in 136 games (11 starts).
Jason Kidd helped convince Kevin Garnett to waive his no-trade clause with the Boston Celtics.
“He’s a man of few words, but when he does say something, everyone listens,” Kidd said of Garnett. “My thing, my pitch was to have an opportunity to win a championship again and being able to not just win a championship, but teach these guys what it takes to win.”
Kidd’s pitch was enough for Garnett to OK the trade that sent him to Brooklyn.
Billy King said he hasn’t had any second thoughts about his decision to hire Kidd.
“I think [Kidd] was ideal for this job,” King said. “I think he was crucial in helping us get [Garnett] to waive the no-trade, so I think he was the ideal candidate. I wouldn’t look back and regret any decision made in hiring him.
“I just know in helping recruit the guys on board, it really helped. ... He made a lot of phone calls to some of the free agents and key guys that helped solidify it.”

Andray Blatche and Kevin Garnett have a rocky history, filled with insults and general disrespect.
Blatche and Garnett famously feuded in 2010, but patched things up last season.
“I can say Kevin, he surprised me,” Blatche said. “We were playing one game against each other, I believe it was last year, in Brooklyn. I was playing against him and he said, ‘Hey man, just keep your head up and keep fighting. When he said that, it caught me off-guard, because me and him have our history, and I said, ‘All right, I guess we’re cool now.’
“I took that in, and ever since then I know everything is over with.”
Next season, Blatche will have the opportunity to study under Garnett.
“There are a lot of things off the court I can learn from Kevin Garnett,” said Blatche. “I’m really excited to have the chance to play with him and learn from him from one of the best.”
