Tom Thibodeau Likely To Be Candidate For Knicks, Nets

Mar 30, 2020 12:20 PM

Tom Thibodeau is expected to be a candidate for both the head coaching vacancies of the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets.

"Thibodeau, I believe, is going to be a candidate for the Knicks' job as well," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "He has long been represented by CAA, who Leon Rose ran the CAA basketball division. Wes Wesley, one of his first clients was Tom Thibodeau.

Thibodeau was fired by the Minnesota Timberwolves during the middle of the 18-19 season.

"He's got a really good working relationship with Leon Rose and Wes Wesley. I know Wes hasn't been named anything official with the Knicks, but trust me, he will be involved. That connection will matter."

Nets Expected To Pursue 'Blue Chip Coach'

Mar 30, 2020 12:04 PM

The Brooklyn Nets fired Kenny Atkinson in early March, elevating Jacque Vaughn to interim head coach. There is an expectation that the Nets will hire a head coach with a proven track record as that's the preference of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

"One of the things that has been expressed sort of the grapevine, that's the way I'm going to say it to protect myself from the aggregators, is that Durant and Irving would like a blue chip coach," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "I don't know what this says about the way they thought about Atkinson, but they want a big name coach."

Tom Thibodeau, Jeff Van Gundy, Stan Van Gundy and Mark Jackson are some of the available head coaches who would fit that description.

Nets Expected To Use Young Talent To Acquire Third Star

Mar 30, 2020 11:39 AM

The Brooklyn Nets are expected to continue to reshape their roster around Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

"I believe they have telegraphed they intend to use some of their young talent to acquire a third star along with Kyrie and Durant," said Brian Windhorst. "Now, we can get enter a healthy debate here about whether Caris LeVert is that third star and they make the decision that he is. But my feel reading the tea leaves, paying attention to what Sean Marks has said and also being aware of some conversations they had at the trade deadline, which was sticking the toe in the water on some things, I think they're going to swing for the fences whenever the season comes. They're going to have to potentially hire a coach that is going to help them do that."

The Nets' two biggest trade chips are believed to be LeVert and Jarrett Allen, though Spencer Dinwiddie could be another player they can trade to acquire a third star. Dinwiddie has been a solid backup for Irving, who has also filled in due to injuries.

Bradley Beal and Jrue Holiday are two players mentioned by Windhorst as possible targets as they're a pair of players who could become available on the trade market.

Kevin Durant Unlikely To Return Even If Season Extends To June/July

Mar 16, 2020 11:13 AM

Kevin Durant is unlikely to return this season even if the Brooklyn Nets' schedule gets extended into June or July.

Durant suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during Game 5 of The Finals last June. Durant subsequently signed with the Nets in free agency.

"Honestly, not very realistic from my standpoint, and not even spoken about," Rich Kleiman said.

Durant's 12-month timetable would line up with a return in June or July, but Kleiman expressed doubts about that scenario.

"It feels like (Durant playing in the 2019-20 season) clearly was not something that was in the cards prior to all this," Kleiman said. "And now, I think just like the rest of the world, it's hard to take anything more than day by day.

"I think that Kevin is going to figure out the space that he needs to be in to continue to rehab during this time. But even that is hard to answer at this point, with the new kind of rules that were put in place last night."

Warriors To Host Nets At Chase Center Without Fans In Attendance

Mar 11, 2020 3:13 PM

The Golden State Warriors will host the Brooklyn Nets in an empty Chase Center on Thursday.

"Due to escalating concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, and in consultation with the City and County of San Francisco, tomorrow night's game vs. the Nets at Chase Center will be played without fans," the team tweeted. "Fans with tickets to this game will receive a refund in the amount paid."

After Thursday's game, the Warriors are away from the Chase Center until March 25.

The team's decision followed an order from the San Francisco Health Office prohibiting events where 1,000 or more people assemble. The Warriors previously ignored a directive to not play Tuesday's game in front of fans.

Belief Growing Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving Had No Interest In Playing For Kenny Atkinson Next Season

Mar 9, 2020 12:51 PM

The Brooklyn Nets held a spirited team meeting on Wednesday following their 39-point home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

After the loss, Atkinson walked into the locker room, sat down on a chair and asked for his players and staff to air out their grievances.

“It was a come-to-Jesus moment,” one source with knowledge of the meeting said. “It was an honest conversation where everyone tried to make things right.”

Several veterans expressed they wanted to see Spencer Dinwiddie play up to his potential and people in the room later called out Dinwiddie and DeAndre Jordan.

Sources say Kevin Durant then participated and pointed out how the Nets must improve their habits and that they were not building the proper culture traits for a title contender.

Durant and Kyrie Irving never connected with Atkinson and there was a growing belief that they did not have interest in playing for him next season when they return from their injuries, according to sources.

No directive from Irving or Durant was given to fire Atkinson, but enough information had been gathered that he had lost his most critical players.
