AK-47 Misses Tuesday's Game At Cleveland

Dec 21, 2005 12:34 AM

Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko sat out Tuesday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers because of back spasms.

Kirilenko, who missed seven games last month with a sprained right ankle, had to leave Saturday's game in Milwaukee after just 17 minutes with the same back problem. In his previous four games, he averaged 17.7 points, 12 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 4.3 blocks.

Kirilenko is likely to remain with the Jazz for the final two games of their road trip to Boston and New York.

Ilgauskas And Gooden Sit Out Practice

Dec 19, 2005 6:53 PM

Cavaliers All-Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas did not practice on Monday because of a mild concussion he sustained on Saturday night when he collided with Miami's Dwyane Wade.

Ilgauskas was going for a loose ball when he banged into Wade's shoulder in the final minute of Cleveland's 115-107 win. The 7-foot-3 Ilgauskas stayed on the floor for several minutes before being helped off with a large lump already swelling over his right eye.

The Cavaliers said Ilgauskas was questionable for Tuesday's game against the Utah Jazz.

Forward Drew Gooden was also kept out of practice with a sprained left ankle. He got hurt when he came down on Shaquille O'Neal's foot in the first half and did not return.

Gooden said his ankle was sore, but he hopes to play.

"I'm going to try to go," Gooden said. "It was really tender, but I've got a couple days' rest and hopefully I'll be able to recover. I hate to miss games, it comes from Roy Williams (his college coach at Kansas) because he used to say you can never replace a game and I've become addicted to that."

LeBron And Hughes Have Heated Argument Following Recent Loss

Dec 16, 2005 12:23 PM

If the Cavaliers are going to get over their current struggles, showing more focus will be among their major tasks, according to Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry.

"The results thus far have shown we can be a good team, but that we need to stay focused on getting better," Ferry replies in an e-mail. "For the most part, we have practiced and played hard."

The Cavs say LeBron James and Larry Hughes had a heated verbal confrontation after one recent loss. Grumbles are reportedly simmering within the team about how rookie head coach Mike Brown conducts practices - namely, that they're too long.

Cavs Lose With Ilgauskas Sidelined

Dec 14, 2005 1:44 AM

Cavaliers All-Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas missed Tuesday night's game against Atlanta with a sprained right knee.

Ilgauskas, averaging 15 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, said his knee is sore from general wear and tear. He's hoping to return for Thursday night's game against Denver.

"I hope so," said Ilgauskas, who believed he aggravated the injury when he got clipped from behind in Saturday night's loss at Milwaukee. "I've never had any problems with my knee before, so I don't know how it's going to react. It has been building up all season."

Alan Henderson started for Ilgauskas against the Hawks.

LBJ Flattered By Artest's Remarks

Dec 12, 2005 7:51 PM

Cavaliers star LeBron James says he's flattered by Ron Artest's comment that he wouldn't mind playing for Cleveland if the Indiana Pacers grant his desire to be traded. Artest, suspended most of last season for a brawl with fans in Detroit, said over the weekend that he wants to be traded because his past haunts him in Indianapolis and the team would be better off without him.

The former NBA defensive player of the year could help the Cavaliers, James said Monday. The Cavaliers have struggled defensively this season.

"You've got to be flattered because he knows we're an up-and-coming team," James said. "Any team in this league could use a guy like Ron Artest."

Pacers president and chief executive Donnie Walsh said Monday that he would try to trade Artest. Artest told The Indianapolis Star in an interview published Sunday that his first choice would be his hometown New York Knicks.

"If I go to the West Coast, I would come back to New York after my contract is up," Artest told the newspaper. "I would go to Cleveland. I wouldn't mind coming off the bench behind LeBron James. There's a lot of players I wouldn't mind coming off the bench behind."

Cavaliers coach Mike Brown was Indiana's associate head coach for the past two seasons and was one of the first people to reach Artest in the stands during the brawl in Detroit. Brown would say only that he had a good relationship with Artest.

"He's with Indiana and, right now, I'm happy with the guys that we have," Brown said. "I heard something about that, but there's nothing to comment on because he's a Pacer. If I was his head coach, I wouldn't want anybody else commenting on my players."

Artest leads the league in steals and is the Pacers' second-leading scorer at 19.4 points a game. James knows firsthand how talented Artest is.

Artest shut down James on Thanksgiving Day, limiting him to 19 points on 6-of-20 shooting in Indiana's 98-76 victory. Artest also outplayed James on the offensive end, scoring 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

"If Michael Jordan said right now he wanted to play for the Cavs, you'd be flattered," James said. "If Magic Johnson said it. Anytime you get a good player or a great player mention a team that you're a part of, you've got to be flattered about it."

LeBron Drops 52, Bucks Drop Cavs

Dec 11, 2005 12:23 AM

LeBron James scored an NBA season-high 52 points, but T.J. Ford tied his career high with 24 and Michael Redd added 23 to help the Milwaukee Bucks beat James and the Cleveland Cavaliers 111-106 on Saturday night.

James was 19-for-29 from the floor, including 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, and 9-for-10 from the line. He fell four points short of his career high of 56 set in a loss at Toronto on March 20.

"I don't want to score 50 again for the rest of my career because I am now 0-2 when I score 50," James joked after the game. "I don't look at it as me playing well. It's the fact that we didn't get a win and that's all I care for."

James, who also had seven assists and seven defensive rebounds, had 31 points in the first half on 13-of-17 shooting and 3-of-4 from the 3-point line.
