Dan Gilbert Promises To Never Move Cavaliers From Cleveland

Aug 31, 2017 6:00 PM

Dan Gilbert has vowed to never move the Cleveland Cavaliers out of Northeast Ohio.

Gilbert responded to rumors that spread following his cancellation of renovations to Quicken Loans Arena.

"CLE, Let's put any silly rumors to rest: I will never move the Cleveland Cavaliers out of Cleveland. Period. And that's unconditional," wrote Gilbert on Twitter.

As part of the $140 million renovation project, the Cavs would have extended their leased at Quicken Loans Arena from 2027 to 2034.

Gilbert bought the team in 2005.

Cavaliers Operating Under Assumption LeBron James Will Leave In 2018

Aug 31, 2017 11:46 AM

Dan Gilbert is operating under the assumption LeBron James will leave the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer of 2018, according to multiple sources.

The Cavaliers sought out a future asset in their trade of Kyrie Irving along with two win-now players in Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder. According to an exec from a rival team, the Cavaliers would have changed their asking price for Irving if they knew James would remain with Cleveland.

Even though many sources around the NBA expect James to leave the Cavaliers, that decision is far from certain.

According to a source, James and Tyronn Lue cooled on the deal for Thomas after it was discovered his injury could force him to miss the early part of the season.

Report: Dan Gilbert Was In Charge Of Cavs' Negotiations On Kyrie Irving Trade

Aug 31, 2017 11:40 AM

According to multiple sources that spoke with The Ringer, Dan Gilbert was in charge of the decision-making on the Cleveland Cavaliers' trade of Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, Brooklyn's 2018 first round pick and Miami's 2020 second round pick.

The Cavaliers hired Koby Altman as general manager after Chauncey Billups decided not to take the job as president of basketball operations.

“A state of organizational chaos is Gilbert’s M.O.,” one executive told The Ringer. “Gilbert thinks he’s the protagonist in the story of the Cavaliers, when, in reality, he’s the antagonist.”

The Cavaliers sought extra assets from the Celtics following Thomas' physical. For the Cavaliers, however, the most coveted assets in the deal were Crowder and Brooklyn's pick.

According to a source, the Celtics priced Thomas' injury into the initial offer of the Nets' pick and Crowder.

Cleveland sought an extra asset from the Celtics following their examination of Thomas, who is recovering from an injured hip.

GM: Kyrie Irving Would Have To Become Top-10 Player To Equal Boston's Trade Cost

Aug 30, 2017 9:28 AM

In an offseason where Paul George and Jimmy Butler were traded by the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls for disappointing returns, the Boston Celtics decided to blow those trade packages out of the water by sending Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and Brooklyn's 2018 first round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Kyrie Irving.

According to one general manager, Irving would have to become a top-10 player in the NBA to equal the value of what Boston send to the Cavaliers.

Cleveland also sought either Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum in the trade.

While Irving is a consistent All-Star and one of the best playmakers in the NBA, he is not widely considered to be a top-10 player.

Isaiah Thomas Could Miss Most Of 17-18 If Recovery Doesn't Proceed Smoothly

Aug 30, 2017 9:22 AM

According to sources, there is a slight chance Isaiah Thomas could miss most of the 17-18 season if recovery from his various hip ailments does not proceed smoothly. Thomas has a bone bruise in addition to his right femoral-acetabular impingement with labral tear.

The Boston Celtics believe they were transparent with the Cleveland Cavaliers about the extent of Thomas' injury during their trade talks.

If the Cavaliers void the trade, the Celtics are confident they can get by with more playmaking from Gordon Hayward and Al Horford, while Terry Rozier and Marcus Smart would offer better defense at Thomas' position.

Thomas has publicly vowed to return from the injury as the same player.

Isaiah Thomas Vows To Return From Hip Injury As 'The Same Player'

Aug 29, 2017 8:17 PM

Isaiah Thomas revealed he has made significant progress in recovering from his hip injury.

"I am not damaged," Thomas told ESPN on Tuesday. "I'll be back, and I'll be the same player."

Thomas was traded by the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers, though the deal is being held up following his physical.

Thomas doesn't believe his hip injury will have a long-term impact upon his career. Thomas will be a free agent in 2018.

"There's never been an indication that I wouldn't be back, and there's never been an indication that this is something messing up my career," Thomas told ESPN. "Maybe I am not going to be back as soon this season as everyone wants me to be, but I'm going to be back, and I'm going to be the same player again. No doctor has told me anything different than that."

Thomas has been in touch with the Cavaliers since his physical.

"I don't know what [the organization] is doing," Thomas told ESPN. "It's out of my control. I just want to talk about what I can control, and I know that this (hip) won't be a problem into the future."

Celtics, Cavs Haven't Been In Contact On Amended Trade

Aug 29, 2017 1:11 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics have not been in touch since reports surfaced more trade compensation would be needed to complete their trade of Kyrie Irving for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 first round pick.

Cleveland began to seek additional compensation after examining Thomas, who is recovering from a hip injury.

The sides have until Thursday to void the deal, agree upon an amended trade or extend the deadline.

The Celtics don't have a contingency plan in place on how to handle the stalemate.

Boston feels like they were transparent with Koby Altman when a trade agreement was reached about the timeline of when Thomas can return.

The Celtics refused to trade either Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown during initial talks with the Cavaliers and they're unlikely to include them now.

Cavaliers Cancel $140M Renovation Of Quicken Loans Arena

Aug 28, 2017 5:31 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have canceled $140 million plans to renovate Quicken Loans Arena.

Community groups opposed spending tax money on the upgrades.

Eighteen days ago, the Ohio Supreme Court ordered Cleveland City Council Clerk Pat Britt to accept referendum petitions submitted by a coalition that opposes Cleveland's use of tax dollars for the upgrades.

Cuyahoga County delayed selling bonds to finance the project while Cleveland's role was being contested. The bond sale had been approved in March.

The Cavaliers had until Sept. 15 to begin the project. The franchise was paying half the cost of the upgrades.

Cleveland's share was to come from admission taxes collected over 11 years on tickets sold for events, beginning in 2024.

Gilbert could move or sell the team by 2027.
