Cavaliers Will Keep J.B. Bickerstaff As Head Coach, Won't Conduct Search In Offseason

Feb 20, 2020 11:57 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted J.B. Bickerstaff as permanent head coach to replace John Beilein.

The Cavaliers always had a succession plan for Bickerstaff to replace Beilein upon the latter's retirement.

Because this agreement was essentially built into the contract Bickerstaff signed and a big reason why he came to Cleveland in the first place, there will be no coaching search this offseason for the Cavaliers.

Bickerstaff is the fourth head coach of the Cavaliers since the start of the 18-19 season.

John Beilein Gave Up More Than $12M In Guaranteed Money

Feb 19, 2020 11:24 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers and John Beilein agreed to part ways on Tuesday, ending a short and fraught tenure for the longtime college head coach in the NBA.

Beilein agreed to walk away from more than $12 million guaranteed on his four-year contract.

The success Beilein found in a very different college game with unpaid players at Michigan and West Virginia didn't translate to the NBA.

Beilein is said to have shown no consistency in relating to players or in building lasting relationships with them.

“He was a dictator — not a coach suited for today’s NBA,” one source said.

John Beilein, Cavaliers Agree To Part Ways

Feb 18, 2020 11:21 PM

John Beilein is stepping down as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Beilein and the Cavaliers negotiated a settlement that will pay him a portion of the remaining money on his 19-20 deal. Beilein left Michigan to become head coach of the Cavaliers on a five-year deal.

The Cavaliers are 14-40 and last in the Eastern Conference.

Beilein struggled in the job both on the court and in the locker room.

Both management and Beilein wanted to dissolve the partnership.

"He wanted to quit at the All-Star break last year... on Cleveland," said Joe Vardon on the Tampering podcast. "He wanted to leave. He wanted them to promote whoever was the G League coach."

Drew was eventually talked out of stepping down by his agent as he had approximately $1 million due to him.

The Cleveland Cavaliers will likely promote J.B. Bickerstaff to interim head coach if they part ways with John Beilein before the end of the season.

Bickerstaff is currently associate head coach.

Bickerstaff would also be a strong candidate to become the next permanent head coach of the Cavaliers.

Bickerstaff has previously been an interim head coach with the Houston Rockets and the Memphis Grizzlies. Bickerstaff was permanent head coach of the Grizzlies for the 18-19 season and was fired last April.

Bickerstaff's father, Bernie Bickerstaff, is a member of the Cavaliers' organization.

John Beilein Expected To Eventually Resign As Head Coach Of Cavaliers

Feb 17, 2020 9:31 PM

John Beilein is expected to be out as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, whether it is this week or at the end of the season.

Beilein was scheduled to meet with Dan Gilbert on Monday.

Beilein signed a five-year contract with the Cavaliers in May, leaving the University of Michigan.

The Cavaliers have struggled both on and off the court under Beilein. Beilein has also struggled with personal issues as his son, Patrick Beilein, resigned as head coach of Niagara in October without having coached a game.

The Cavaliers fired Tyronn Lue in 2018 after an 0-6 start, then promoted Larry Drew to interim head coach.

John Beilein, Cavs Expected To Reach Decision On Beilein's Future Within Next 24-48 Hours

Feb 17, 2020 1:45 AM

John Beilein and the Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed the possibility of Beilein stepping down from his coaching role before the end of the All-Star break, league sources told Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Beilein is expected to reach a decision in the next 24-48 hours.

Shams Charania, Kelsey Russo and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic added that Beilein is not expected to remain head coach beyond this season.

The 67-year-old Beilein signed a five-year deal with the Cavs last summer.

The losses combined with private and public skirmishes with Cavs players has worn on Beilein, according to sources. Beilein has struggled in connecting with NBA players.

J.B. Bickerstaff was hired as an associate head coach with an eye towards him eventually taking over the team from Beilein.
