Lauri Markkanen Fully Expected He'd End Up With Spurs

Aug 31, 2021 8:26 AM

The Chicago Bulls received sign-and-trade interest on Lauri Markkanen from a number of teams before eventually sending him to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans, Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics all expressed interest in Markkanen.

But the Bulls refused several trade offers and eventually were hung up on a second round pick also being included from Cleveland.

Markkanen is joining the Cavaliers on a four-year, $67.5 million deal with a partial guarantee on the fourth year.

Markkanen fully expected to be part of the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade to the Spurs, but Chicago is believed to have pulled him from the porospal.

Lauri Markkanen: I Don't Think I've Hit Close To My Ceiling Yet

Aug 30, 2021 8:07 AM

Nearly a month after the start of free agency, Lauri Markkanen finally found a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a three-team sign-and-trade.

“I don’t think I’ve hit close to my ceiling yet,” Markkanen said in a phone interview with NBC Sports Chicago.

Markkanen was a lottery pick by the Bulls in 2017 and had an uneven tenure with the team.

“The last couple years have been mentally pretty tough,” Markkanen said. “I’ve grown as a person because of that so I wouldn’t change it. I’ve learned a lot. But I just felt like I need to get back to the old me and how I know I can play the game. I think this is a good opportunity for me to do that.

“I’m happy. I’m really excited and looking forward. We kind of felt like I needed a fresh start. And I appreciate all the people who were involved to help facilitate it and make it happen.”

Markkanen believes he will fit well with the Cavaliers.

“I think I fit in well — young core, exciting point guards. I’m looking forward to playing with those big guys in the frontcourt. They’re all young, talented guys. I think we can grow together,” Markkanen said. “And I can’t wait to learn from a player like Kevin Love. Just learn aspects of the game from him and the mentality of the game, how he approaches it. I’m looking forward to that as well.”

Kevin Love Has No Interest In Buyout With Cavaliers

Aug 28, 2021 1:07 PM

Cleveland Cavaliers big man Kevin Love has no interest in a buyout, his agent told ESPN. Love is under contract for two more seasons, through 2022-23 and is owed over $60.2 million.

The Cavs acquired Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014. Love helped Cleveland to win the 2016 NBA Finals. Since that point, Love has struggled to stay healthy. He's only appeared in as many as 60 games once in the past five seasons.

This offseason, Cleveland re-signed Jarrett Allen, drafted Evan Mobley and acquired Lauri Markkanen via sign-and-trade. The logjam led to speculation that Love would want a buyout. Doing so would allow the veteran big man to join a title contender.

Kevin Love, Cavaliers Making Progress On Buyout

Aug 27, 2021 5:13 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Kevin Love are making progress toward a buyout. Love has two seasons and $60 million remaining on his contract extension signed shortly after the departure of LeBron James in 2018.

The buyout is not close to a done deal and talks could still fall apart, according to a source.

Love has been hampered by injuries, a general decline in his performance, and intermittent attitude issues since signing his extension.

The Cavaliers acquired Lauri Markkanen in a sign-and-trade with the Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers on Friday, which will further limit any available minute for Love.

Cavaliers Hire Sidney Lowe As Assistant Coach

Aug 26, 2021 4:05 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have hired Sidney Lowe as an Assistant Coach.

Lowe has been on the coaching sidelines for nearly three decades and returns to Cleveland where he was an assistant coach for five seasons under Mike Fratello from 1994-1999. Over that stretch, he was part of a staff that helped the Cavaliers garner three playoff appearances (1995, 1996, 1998). The Washington, DC, native and former NBA point guard was most recently an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons for the past three seasons (2018-2021), including an NBA postseason berth in 2019.

“Sidney brings a wealth of coaching experience and familiarity to our staff,” said Bickerstaff. “He is a great teacher of the game and his ability to build lasting relationships across the board is integral to the growth of our overall culture here in Cleveland. Sidney also brings all of the character traits we value as a human being - loyalty, trust and integrity. I look forward to working with him and building something special together with our young and talented roster.”

Cavaliers Looking For Wing Help, Teams Covet Larry Nance Jr.

Aug 22, 2021 7:16 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers continue to seek wing help via trade. The Cavs may look at Kyle Anderson or Dillon Brooks of the Memphis Grizzlies. Cleveland's front office has also had conversations with the Atlanta Hawks about Cam Reddish.

Opposing teams have been look for Cleveland's 2022 first round pick in trade talks. Other clubs have also made trade offers for forward Larry Nance Jr. Kevin Love is expected to remain on the Cavs roster, but may be shifted to a backup role. Cleveland drafted Evan Mobley at the 2021 NBA Draft and re-signed center Jarrett Allen as a free agent.

If Cleveland goes the free agent route for wing help, they have some interest in Denzel Valentine, Svi Mykhailiuk and Garrison Mathews. The Cavaliers have also looked into signing guard Kevin Pangos, who is rumored to be looking at coming to the NBA after starting his career overseas.

Kevin Love, Cavaliers Have Yet To Discuss Buyout

Aug 5, 2021 11:30 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have already spoken to Kevin Love about his role and minutes moving forward, a source tells Jason Lloyd of The Athletic.

The Cavaliers committed to Jarrett Allen with a five-year, $100 million contract as well as by selecting Evan Mobley at No. 3. The Cavaliers will almost certainly prioritize Allen and Mobley with minutes.

Love is owed $31.3 million this season and $28.9 million in 22-23. While both sides would likely benefit from a buyout, discussions haven't occurred to this point. Love would likely need to give back between $12 million and $15 million for the Cavaliers to consider agreeing to a buyout. Love has given no indication he's willing to do that.

Love averaged 12.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 24.9 minutes over 25 games last season.
