The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted Mike Gansey to lead general manager.

The promotion comes following the ascension of Koby Altman to president of basketball operations.

Gansey will continue assisting Altman in scouting and personnel decisions, while increasing his role in the Cavaliers draft preparations and logistics.

"Mike has been an incredible resource to me and this organization and his work behind the scenes gives me great confidence that he is ready to take on more of a leadership role," Altman said in a team statement. "His community roots provides a unique perspective when evaluating players and the type of commitment needed to make a positive impact in Cleveland. I could not think of a better person to work alongside as we continue building this team toward sustainable success."

In addition to Gansey, Altman also announced the promotions of Brandon Weems to assistant general manager from his previous title as senior director of player personnel; Jason Hillman to vice president of basketball operations from his previous title as basketball chief of staff/team counsel; and Jon Nichols to vice president of basketball strategy and personnel from his previous title of senior director of strategy and research.

Cavaliers Waive Kevin Pangos

Feb 20, 2022 9:27 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have waived point guard Kevin Pangos. Pangos joined the Cavs this offseason after playing the first six seasons of his career overseas.

Multiple reports from Europe say that Pangos has an agreement to sign with CSKA Moscow after he clears waivers in the NBA. That'll be a return to Russia for the Gonzaga product, as Pangos previously played for Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Pangos has also played for top clubs in Spain and Lithuania.

In playing for the Cavaliers, Pangos fulfilled a personal goal of making it to the NBA. As one of the top guards in Europe, Pangos had stated he hoped to eventually make the jump to the NBA.

As for Cleveland, they'll now have an open roster spot. That could allow the Cavs to add veteran help for their young roster, as they pursue a playoff run.

Hometown Kids, Karl-Anthony Towns Shine On All-Star Saturday

Feb 20, 2022 8:25 AM

NBA All-Star Saturday had some twists on previous competitions and delivered some surprising results. Ohio-related stars stole the show to delight the Cleveland crowd.

The hometown Cleveland Cavaliers took home the first team-version of the Skills Contest. Team Cavs, consisting of Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland and Evan Mobley defeated Team Rookies, consisting of Scottie Barnes, Cade Cunningham and Josh Giddey. Mobley won the contest for Team Cavs by draining his first half-court shot attempt in the final round. Team Antetokounmpo, featuring Giannis, Thanasis and Alex Antetokounmpo was eliminated after the first round.

In the Three-Point Contest, Karl-Anthony Towns was dominant. Towns came into the contest with the worst odds and blew away the field. The Minnesota Timberwolves center scored the second-highest total ever with 29 points in the final round.

In a somewhat underwhelming Dunk Contest, Ohio got another win. Dayton University product Obi Toppin was the most consistent performer on his way to a championship. Toppin's first two dunks featured him jumping over dunk coach Chuck Milan and a windmill dunk. In the final round, the New York Knicks forward tried a dunk where he palmed the ball against the glass before dunking. After two attempts, he tossed the ball off the glass and windmilled it after going through his legs. Needing to just complete a dunk on his final attempt to win the contest, Toppin pulled off his originally planned slam.

LeBron James Says His Last Season Will Be Played With Son Bronny's Team

Feb 26, 2022 7:12 AM

In what has become his annual pre-All-Star Game media session, LeBron James was candid about his future. In wide-ranging session, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar said he's not sure what his future holds. James even left open the possibility that he might return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third time.

“The door’s not closed on that,” James said. “I’m not saying I’m coming back and playing, I don’t know. I don’t know what my future holds. I don’t even know when I’m free.”

James has one more season under contract with the Lakers. He'll then be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2023.

While he didn't commit to, or close the door on, a return to Cleveland, James did share the one part of his basketball future that he does know.

“My last year will be played with my son,” James said. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.”

Bronny James is a high school junior and currently won't be draft-eligible until the 2024 NBA Draft. Unless something changes, that's the earliest we could see the father-son duo team up in the NBA.

James Harden, Kyrie Irving Had Friction As Teammates This Season

Feb 10, 2022 4:53 PM

When the Brooklyn Nets played at the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 17th, Kyrie Irving lit some sage in their locker room before the game. Irving does this on occasion and his history in Cleveland could have contributed to the ritual.

According to sources who were in the locker room at the time, Harden looked at Irving in a perplexed way.

“Definitely a weird vibe between them,” one source said. “You could tell Harden was annoyed, and Kyrie wasn’t feeling James.”

Harden also appeared to be annoyed by Irving's status as a part time player when asked by the media.

“I’mma give him the shot,” Harden once joked of Irving.

A well-placed source says Irving was similarly eager to see Harden traded.
