Davis Scores 34, Game-winner As Warriors Beat Mavs

Dec 31, 2005 12:41 AM

Baron Davis was Golden State's latest hero against Dallas, scoring a season-high 34 points, including the go-ahead basket with .5 seconds left, for a 111-109 victory on Friday night.

Jason Richardson had 32 points and Troy Murphy contributed 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Warriors.

"There've been many times when we came in here and lost by two or three, and other times when we lost by 20," Richardson said. "Anytime we can win on them, we'll take it."

Dallas led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter, but Richardson scored 16 in the final quarter and Davis added eight.

With the game tied at 109, Davis nailed an open 21-footer from the left wing with less than a second left to give the Warriors their first lead of the fourth quarter.

Cuban: Mavs Not Interested In Deal For Artest

Dec 24, 2005 7:21 AM

No matter what Charles Barkley and other announcers might think the Mavericks should do, the team is not in the Ron Artest sweepstakes.

"It's not gonna happen," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said before Friday's game against Seattle.

Barkley, Kenny Smith and other national analysts have linked the Mavericks with the disgruntled Indiana Pacers forward, who has requested a trade. The experts have said Artest would be a piece who could put a select few teams on par with San Antonio and Detroit.

"If I was the Suns, Mavericks or Heat, I would try to trade for Ron Artest," Barkley said Thursday during the Mavericks-Kings game on TNT. "[They are] the only three teams that have an outside chance of gaining on Detroit and San Antonio, so they might as well roll the dice.

"If no one makes a trade, [Detroit and San Antonio] are the teams that will play for the championship."

Kenny Smith, Barkley's co-host on TNT's wraparound show, agreed.

"Those three teams [Phoenix, Dallas and Miami] can take a chance because they are already good, so he can never explode the situation, he can only enhance it," Smith said.

Coach Avery Johnson only laughed when told of the commentators' thoughts.

Stackhouse To Play In Seattle

Dec 22, 2005 11:33 PM

Jerry Stackhouse returns to the Dallas Mavericks lineup Friday night at Seattle ready to make a contribution, even it it?s a small one at first.

"I hope I can just turn it on," Stackhouse said with a laugh Thursday night before the Mavericks? game against the Sacramento Kings at Arco Arena.

"Nah, I understand it?s a process getting back in the fold of what we?re doing. Being there and seeing it is still not the same as being on the floor."

Out the first 26 games of the National Basketball Association season nursing a sore right knee hasn?t been easy for the Mavericks? top scorer off the bench last season. The rehabilitation was frustrating at times, as swelling in the knee aborted a couple attempts to come back sooner.

Stackhouse estimated the knee is about "90 percent" and has responded well to practice the last two weeks. The next hurdle is to build up to playing shape.

Kobe Goes Off, Drops Career High 62 In Three Quarters

Dec 21, 2005 2:00 AM

Kobe Bryant was at his incredible best Tuesday night, scoring a career-high 62 points in just three quarters to lead the Los Angeles Lakers over the Dallas Mavericks 112-90.

The 27-year-old Bryant, who brought a 31.3-point average into the game, shot 18-of-31, including 4-of-10 from 3-point range, and made 22 of 25 foul shots while playing only 33 minutes.

Bryant scored 15 points in the first quarter, 17 in the second, and a franchise-record 30 in the third before taking a seat for good with the Lakers leading 95-61.

The previous Lakers record for points in a quarter was 24 shared by Bryant and Hall of Famers Jerry West and Elgin Baylor.

Armstrong Fined For Cheering On Redskins

Dec 19, 2005 2:08 AM

Mavericks guard Darrell Armstrong was so happy his beloved Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys that he grabbed a microphone before Sunday night's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves and hollered, "How 'bout those Redskins!"

It's going to cost him $1,000.

Dallas coach Avery Johnson announced the fine during his postgame news conference and team owner Mark Cuban later verified it was legit, much to the chagrin of a disbelieving Armstrong. The money will all go to charity, with Johnson saying the Cowboys would decide the recipient.

The Redskins wrapped up a 35-7 victory over the Cowboys shortly before the Mavericks left the locker room to play the Timberwolves.

Walton Centers Criticism Around Dampier

Dec 15, 2005 2:12 AM

It will take more than one night like Wednesday's workmanlike showing by Erick Dampier to change the ever-growing criticism he's getting, which has reached nationwide proportions.

ESPN analyst Bill Walton is the latest to jump on the bandwagon. Walton was at American Airlines Center for Wednesday night's game, and he said the ineffectiveness of Dampier has become too obvious to ignore.

"The Mavericks are the second-best team in the Western Conference right now, clearly a step behind San Antonio because of the limitations of Erick Dampier," Walton said before tip-off. "The toughest thing for all these guys who play their hearts out every game is to dragged down by Erick Dampier."

The 6-11 center was averaging 6.0 points and 7.2 rebounds in 24 minutes per game going into Wednesday's contest against Phoenix. He had a solid night's work with 12 rebounds and two blocks against the Suns. But Walton said the Mavericks are no better off with Dampier as their center than they were in years past.

"It looked like they were moving forward when they bought out Shawn Bradley's contract," Walton said. "Now, they still have him. His name just changed to Erick Dampier."

Stackhouse Shooting For Dec. 23 Return

Dec 14, 2005 3:06 AM

Jerry Stackhouse knows there are pitfalls when picking target dates for coming back from injury, but he's ready to pencil in a return.

Dec. 23 at Seattle is the date. And the logic for making his season debut then makes perfect sense. The Mavericks have two days off after that game, host Indiana on Dec. 26, then have three more days off.

It's a good spot in the schedule to ease back into game action with plenty of built-in recovery time for his troublesome right knee.

"I'm not really having any pain," Stackhouse said Tuesday after going through a full practice for the first time since early October. "I feel like the worst days are over. Now I'm trying to get back into a rhythm of playing basketball and in some sort of basketball shape.

"I'm hoping to use these days to get some work, then maybe be ready to dance a little bit."

Howard's Return Sooner Than Expected

Dec 13, 2005 3:48 AM

Josh Howard wasn't breaking any speed records in his first game back. But at least he was breaking a sweat.

While he was limited to less than a quarter's worth of work in the first half, the Mavericks small forward was back after missing eight games because of a sprained right ankle. Howard finished with four points and three rebounds, but not necessarily a smile on his face.

"I wanted to be out there [in the second half]," Howard said. "But the ankle got stiff at halftime, and coach said it was best not to play."

Going on adrenaline, Howard looked lively early in the game, although he said he felt the ankle tweak a couple of times.

His return, even at less than 100 percent, pushed the Mavericks closer to full strength, and they could have a full complement of players for the first time this season by the end of the week.

Jerry Stackhouse, out all season because of swelling in his right knee, is scheduled to go through a full practice today. It will be an important day for the 6-6 swingman.

"We want to put the knee through some stressful situations and see how it responds," coach Avery Johnson said. "We're hoping for a full-scale (workout)."

How Stackhouse does in the aftermath will determine if he can return later in the week.

Mavericks' Van Horn Needs MRI On Hip

Dec 13, 2005 3:35 AM

Dallas Mavericks forward Keith Van Horn was scheduled to have an MRI and an X-ray on Tuesday to determine the extent of a hip injury that knocked him out of Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Van Horn banged into Lakers forward Kwame Brown for an offensive foul in the second quarter of a 109-106 Dallas loss. He was down for about two minutes, then was helped to the locker room and didn't return.

Van Horn said he was told there was possible nerve damage in his right hip.

Terry's Status Uncertain; Howard To Sit Out Tonight

Dec 9, 2005 1:06 AM

Coach Avery Johnson said Thursday that the team would make a game-time decision tonight at Memphis on whether guard Jason Terry would play.

"He's getting a little bit better," Johnson said, "but we don't know if he'll be ready to play [tonight]."

Terry did not practice Thursday. He spent the time rehabbing his hamstring injury.

Forward Josh Howard (sprained ankle) worked out in noncontact drills, but Johnson said he would not play tonight.
