Steve Nash explained on Friday how he has no interest in becoming a ring-chaser, despite how badly he has sought a title and has a limited number of seasons remaining.
“Well, I mean I think for me, of course I want to win a ring,” Nash says. “But at the same time I’m like, ‘I don’t want to win it with those guys. Those guys have been the enemy for X amount of years.’ So I’m not quite in that camp yet — ‘I don’t care, put me on the best team and I’m going to try to win a ring.’ I still feel like kids from my neighborhood want to beat the kids from that neighborhood, like we were growing up. I’m not ready to concede, ‘Well, they’re better than us, I’ll join them.’ I’m just not there yet. Maybe I’ll get there.”
Nash did concede that reuniting with Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks would be a different type of scenario.
“I’m not saying that couldn’t happen,” Nash said.
Many around the NBA have wondered why Nash hasn't sought a trade to a contender.
“A lot of people are like, ‘Well, why don’t you ask for a trade?’ Well, you could ask for a trade and go to a team that’s in a worse position this year,” said Nash. “So I try to be thankful for what I have, great teammates, great coach, a city I’ve had a lot of success and enjoyment in, I just want to play until they tell me it’s time to move on.”
Dallas had been pursuing J.R Smith with the hope of re-reuniting him with consultant Tim Grgurich who worked with Smith in Denver.
But the Nuggets are not interested in the deal.
The Pistons will not deal Tayshaun Prince to Dallas for Caron Butler and a first round pick.
Detroit hopes to re-sign Prince and believe they can get value in return for him as a sign-and-trade if they are unable to agree to a new deal.
The Mavericks are making last-ditch efforts to acquire Tayshaun Prince or J.R. Smith ahead of Thursday's NBA trade deadline, according to sources.
However, Dallas isn't overly optimistic about acquiring either player.
Prince and Smith have been high on the team's wish list since Caron Butler went down with a serious knee injury. Their skill set and expiring contracts interest the Mavericks.
The Pistons have rebuffed every inquiry about Prince and the Bulls are the most often mentioned destination for Smith.
Mark Cuban spoke out against Wednesday's trade completed by the NBA-owned New Orleans Hornets.
The Hornets acquired Carl Landry in a deal for Marcus Thornton, which included cash considerations.
“That’s just wrong. That’s just wrong. That’s just absolutely, positively wrong,’” Cuban said. “I’ll probably go against the grain from everybody else, but that is so far wrong that it’s not even close.
“There’s so few teams in the league that can afford to do that and yet we’re allowing a team that’s owned by the league to do that?”
The Hornets were purchased by the NBA in December and are essentially owned by the 29 other teams.
“I don’t need to be competing economically with the league and myself,” Cuban said.
The Heat are attempting to acquire Brendan Haywood in a trade with Dallas, according to a source. Miami is offering Mike Miller as part of a proposed deal, but Dallas is not currently interested.
Haywood re-signed with the Mavericks last offseason.
The Nets and Mavericks have been in talks about a Devin Harris trade since it became apparent that New Jersey wasn't going to acquire Carmelo Anthony.
New Jersey wants the expiring contract of the injured Caron Butler, rookie Dominique Jones and a first round pick from Dallas, according to sources.
The Mavericks, sources said, "turned down" that offer because they are unwilling to add two assets like Jones and a first-rounder to go along with Butler.
Harris badly wants out of New Jersey after hearing his name in trade rumors for more than a year.
Negotiations are expected to continue, but the two sides have yet to reach a consensus on workable trade terms.
Portland is the only other serious suitor for Harris, who the Mavericks traded to the Nets back in February of 2008.
The Spurs have a six-game lead over the Mavericks for the top spot in the Western Conference and the best record in the NBA, but Jason Terry has predicted that Dallas will surpass San Antonio in the standings.
"We're going to catch them sooner or later, whether it's now or in the playoffs," Terry said. "We'd rather it be in the playoffs, in the Western finals or what have you. But we're going to catch them."
The Mavericks have won 13 of their last 14 games. San Antonio and Dallas have met five times in the postseason in the last decade.
The Nets have tried to trade Devin Harris in various scenarios this season.
Harris is hoping New Jersey is ultimately successful before the deadline, according to sources.
Harris and Avery Johnson have struggled to get along this season, even after the former All-Star pushed for the Nets to hire the coach he played under with the Mavericks.
Harris is hoping for a trade that would send him back to Dallas, but the Blazers are also interested.
