Gersson Rosas, Mavericks Part Ways After Three Months

Oct 29, 2013 4:34 PM

Gersson Rosas and the Dallas Mavericks are parting ways after just three months.

Rosas came from the Houston Rockets' front office to become general manager of the Mavericks under Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson.

"I like Mark's philosophy," Rosas said to ESPN Deportes in September. "Mark wants to win at all costs. And he gives you the tools so that the team can win. He's a competitor and I like that."

Rosas was hired by the Mavericks to supplement Donnie Nelson with new ideas, while he wanted to head basketball operations.

Nash: Vince Carter's Impact On Canadian Basketball Has Been Underestimated

Oct 22, 2013 10:07 PM

Steve Nash is general manager of the Canadian national basketball team and recently wrote a special piece on ESPN about the very promising state of the country's basketball talent.

Anthony Bennett was the first overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft, joining fellow Canadian Tristan Thompson on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Andrew Wiggins, meanwhile, is the most highly celebrated player coming out of high school since LeBron James in 2003.

Nash was raised in British Columbia.

"Right now interest and participation in the game in Canada is at an all-time high. While my friends and I grew up watching the NBA like a lot of Canadians, the arrival of the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies brought the NBA and the game of basketball into more households across the country exponentially and with a new intimacy. The sport's visibility exploded, and with it so did interest, excitement and participation.

"For six and a half years, much of Canada's young talent watched and fell in love with a flamboyant, human highlight film named Vince Carter. He inspired them nightly while playing for the home team Raptors. I think Vince's presence in our country shouldn't be underestimated. His charisma was incredibly powerful in attracting a Canadian audience to the game of basketball for a memorable period of time. More and more kids play basketball every year in Canada, and I think the NBA's arrival played a pivotal role in the game's growth."

Nash also credits the Internet to reaching Canadians interested in basketball.

Jose Calderon To Make Preseason Debut For Mavericks On Saturday

Oct 14, 2013 10:38 PM

The Dallas Mavericks are taking a caution approach with the hamstring injury of Jose Calderon and the veteran guard plans to participate fully in practice on Tuesday and make his preseason debut on Saturday.

The Mavericks play the Charlotte Bobcats on the road Saturday.

"I think I’ll be able to do more with the team (Tuesday),'' Calderon said on Monday. "But if I start practicing (Tuesday), just playing in Indiana doesn't make any sense -- just going right away to full speed.''

Calderon initially injured his hamstring in practice on Oct. 5.

Renaldo Balkman Making Most Of 2nd Chance In NBA With Mavericks

Oct 13, 2013 9:12 PM

Renaldo Balkman is receiving another chance at the NBA as he attempts to make the Dallas Mavericks' roster.

Balkman was banned from the Philippines Basketball Association for shoving some of his teammates and an assistant coach while confronting three referees last March.

“To get a second chance, to put your foot back in the door, to get your name circulated within the NBA, that’s hard sometimes,’’ Balkman said. “Everybody grows up, everybody matures, and I feel like I have matured.

“Everybody deserves a second chance. In my case, yeah, I deserve a second chance.’’

Balkman ended up finishing last season in the Puerto Rico Basketball League.

Balkman was a first round pick in 2006 by the New York Knicks.

Rick Carlisle Pleading Samuel Dalembert To Improve Conditioning

Oct 8, 2013 12:48 PM

Rick Carlisle let Samuel Dalembert know in front of the entire Dallas Mavericks' team that the veteran center's conditioning was unacceptable. Then, the coach lamented Dalembert's basketball shape to the media, unasked.

"The first thing is that Dalembert has got to continue to work to get in shape,'' Carlisle said. "He's just not in the condition that he needs to be in, and we need him.

"Tonight he struggled out there and I think a lot of it is conditioning. And so in the next 21-22 days he's got to get to a higher level.''

Dalembert says he is battling a sore back, which occurred when one of his teammates fell on him on the first day of practice.

"The main thing that happened to me is that I got hurt,'' Dalembert said. "I got hurt in the first practice of camp.

"Stupid me, my pride takes over and I wanted to practice. I didn’t want to take off, so that kind of slowed me down a little bit.”

Jose Calderon sat out Friday's scrimmage due to a sore left hamstring.

Calderon has been limited over the past three days.

The Dallas Mavericks are also dealing with injuries to Devin Harris and Shane Larkin, which will open up time for Gal Mekel.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for any guy coming to a new situation with some guys banged up,” Carlisle said. ““Gal, he’s picking things up as he goes along. We need him and we need him to play.”

Vince Carter Still Has No Timetable On Retirement

Oct 4, 2013 1:42 PM

Vince Carter will turn 37 on January 26, but he continues to have no timetable for when he may retire.

“I don’t want to do that to myself,” Carter said. “I don’t want to limit myself. I think doing that you’ll start thinking about [retirement] as the season goes on. I’ll just let the body pretty much dictate how I’m feeling in the end.”

Carter averaged 13.4 points in just 26 minutes per game last season with the Dallas Mavericks.

Carter gives the Mavericks solid production and also leadership.

“It’s not just his scoring and spectacular plays,” Carlisle said. “It’s what his presence on the floor means.”
