Dwight Howard Wants To Make 'Basketball-Based Decision', Could Come Quickly

Jun 30, 2013 12:07 PM

Dwight Howard will meet with the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers between Sunday night and Tuesday. Howard wants a quick resolution to his free agency and a source said his decision could come before the end of the week.

"He wants to make a decision based on basketball more than anything else," one source said.

Howard has had the Rockets as his frontrunner for several weeks since they would instantly become title contenders.

The Lakers remain a possibility, but are currently considered second in order of preference. The thinking is that the Lakers won't be a title contender in 2014 and may struggle to rebuild around him. Also, Howard did not enjoy playing in Mike D'Antoni's system.

The Rockets are planning on pitching to Howard their team's strength in China and the lack of state income tax in Texas as financial benefits to offset the difference he can make from the Lakers.

The Mavericks will attempt to sell Howard on a two-year plan to reshape its roster around the core of Mark Cuban, Rick Carlisle and Dirk Nowitzki.

Howard has never expressed any interest in playing in his hometown of Atlanta, giving them perhaps the longest odds.

The Warriors would need a sign-and-trade agreement to acquire Howard and it is believed their meeting is largely about establishing the franchise as a marquee destination for 2014.

Source Calls Rondo To Mavericks Trade Rumor 'Ridiculous'

Jun 29, 2013 7:37 PM

Danny Ainge has denied trying to trade Rajon Rondo, and two league sources corroborated his stance by dismissing a report that the Celtics president discussed a deal that would send Rondo to Dallas.

"The Celtics haven't had any conversations with Dallas about Rondo," said one source. "That's ridiculous. There's no truth to it. What in the world does Dallas have to offer for Rondo?"

A second source refuted the report by pointing to the state of the Mavericks roster.

"They're trying to rebuild around a 37-year-old Dirk Nowitzki," he said. "They have a lot of old expiring contracts, and that's about it."

Mavericks Interested In Rondo Trade

The Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics have discussed a trade involving Rajon Rondo, according to a report from Mike Fisher of DallasBasketball.com.

The Celtics would like to acquire Shane Larkin in a deal with the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are pursuing Dwight Howard via free agency and would have difficulty in acquiring Rondo while preserving sufficient cap space.

Carlisle Sees Similarities Between Shane Larkin, J.J. Barea

Jun 29, 2013 1:04 PM

Rick Carlisle thinks Shane Larkin can approximate some of J.J. Barea’s overall production.

"I don't think that he and Barea are exact duplicates,'' Carlisle said. "We've missed, the last couple of years, the element that Barea brought to the game here.

"Being able to get to the rim, being able to get it going from three, the resourcefulness and some of those kinds of things. Shane's going to bring some of those things.''

A 5-foot-11 point guard, Larkin averaged 14.5 points on 60.5 percent true shooting while collecting ACC Player of the Year honors this past season.

"One of the things that's really unique about him is from an analytic standpoint he's one of the best guys we've seen coming out of college shooting off the dribble,'' Carlisle said. "And he can also get to places and get other guys involved, so I just think he's good and he's going to get better.

"I just think he's the kind of guy that fits in to today's game. I think he's going to help other guys on our team be better players and I think he's going to keep getting better, too, because he's a worker.''

Nowitzki Made Recruiting Pitch To Howard

Jun 27, 2013 9:02 PM

Dirk Nowitzki made a recruiting call to Dwight Howard.

“I reached out to him, but that’s probably as far as I would go,” Nowitzki said. “I told him we’d love to have him and that’s really about it. It’s not like we call each other every day. I didn’t write him a letter. I just had a little phone contact and that was about it.”

Nowitzki regards Howard as the best big man in the league.

“He’s a beast on both ends,” Nowitzki said. “I’d love to play with a guy who can just get the ball in the post and spread the offense around the floor and on defense a guy who can protect the rim like that is a luxury so we’d love to have him but so would the other teams with cap room. We’ll wait and see what happens.”
