Mavericks Unlikely To Start Nerlens Noel

Sep 25, 2017 5:29 PM

The Dallas Mavericks may bring Nerlens Noel off the bench this season.

“I had a discussion three days ago with Nerlens’s agent, Rich Paul, about that and then two days ago Nerlens, myself, Rich, and Donnie Nelson were on a conference call talking about it," Carlisle said. “I basically said to them that I’m not sure that he is going to start.”

Dirk Nowitzki now plays almost exclusively at center and is unlikely to come off the bench.

“At this point in time Dirk at the 5 position is probably the best scenario for Dirk and for our team. And I just don’t think Dirk is the guy that is going to come off the bench as long as I’m here.

"There’s a very good chance Nerlens is going to come off the bench.”

Noel took the one-year qualifying offer from the Mavericks and will become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Dirk Nowitzki Will Make Retirement Decision Based On Health

Sep 17, 2017 12:40 PM

Dirk Nowitzki has not made a decision about his future as he will make up his mind completely depending on his health.

"If I miss another 30 to 40 games in a row, then obviously, it's not meant to be," he said. "But if I can stay sort of healthy like I did at the end of the season, when I thought I moved OK and had some good games, then maybe we'll do two more [seasons]. But we'll see how it goes."

Nowitzki had an Achilles issue last year that he needed two months to recover from.

"It's been a long summer, way too long," he said. "I've been busting my butt trying to get ready, get in game shape. I've progressed well, and I'm looking forward to camp and play some of those new guys. ...

"I don't anticipate any problems, but you know, at 39, I guess anything is possible."

Nowitzki figures to play more at center this season.

"I have no idea, really," he said of his role. "Obviously, we're pleased to have Nerlens [Noel] back at the five with his athleticism. We got a lot of bigs now, with [Josh] McRoberts hopefully healthy and playing, and Jeff Withey, who showed he can play and he's more athletic than you think. And Salah [Mejri] wants his minutes as a shot blocker.

"And I still think the game is going smaller. Harrison [Barnes] is going to see a lot of minutes at the four."

Mark Cuban: Streaming Will Make Live Content Even More Valuable

Sep 11, 2017 9:10 PM

The Houston Rockets were sold to Tilman Feritta for $2.2 billion and Mark Cuban believes it is a good indication of the continuing rise in NBA franchise valuations.

Cuban has had a longtime rivalry with the Rockets since he purchased the Dallas Mavericks but he believes Ferrita bought the franchise at a good price.

"[Fertitta] got a bargain," said Cuban. "The streaming world is going to make destination live content even more valuable. It's much harder to draw an audience over the top with unlimited choices verus TV where we are one of 200 channels."

Cuban was influential in changing the culture of the NBA.

"When I got here, everyone tried to make me go old school and be like everyone else. Owners were supposed to write checks, and that was it."

Cuban purchased the Mavericks in 2000 for $285 million.
