Mark Cuban Wants Teams To Play 5-7 Games, Have Tournament For Last Two Playoff Seeds

May 27, 2020 1:26 AM

Mark Cuban told ESPN that he wants all 30 NBA teams to play 5-7 regular season games, then proceed to a play-in tournament for the last two playoff seeds if the season were to resume.

Cuban believes that all 30 teams must participate to fulfill the requirements of local television.

Under Cuban's plan, the top 10 teams from both conferences would qualify for the postseason and be reseeded by record. The 17th seed would then play the 20th seed, with the 18th seed matching up with the 19th seed.

Those winners would advance to play the 15th and 16th seed for the final playoff positions.

Cuban added that his plan addresses concerns surrounding the league's financial situation while giving players enough time to prepare for the postseason.

Mark Cuban Says He Was Surprised By Kristaps Porzingis Trade Offer

May 22, 2020 1:45 AM

Mark Cuban said he was surprised by the New York Knicks' offer to trade Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks.

“Very. It happens in the NBA. It’s like the James Harden trade. Harden gets traded from OKC to the Rockets and I’m like, damn, why didn’t we even get that offered to us? We weren’t in the mix. Nobody was. It was one phone call and the Rockets said yes. [The Porzingis trade] was our one phone call,” said Cuban on WFAN's Moose & Maggie show.

The Mavs received Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee along with Porzingis in the deal.

Cuban added that he was happy with Porzingis' performance with the Mavs thus far.

"He's an otherworldly talent. He works hard, he's committed to the team. I think it's like a lot of jobs for anybody, not just in sports. You go into that first job after you get out of school or you go into your first job, wherever your circumstances are, and you adapt in one way and you see things and then you get to a different set of circumstances and you just have a different perspective. I think KP just needed a change of scenery and he's been phenomenal."

Mark Cuban To Use 'White House Protocol' When Mavs Reopen Practice Facility

May 12, 2020 11:48 AM

The Dallas Mavericks won't reopen their practice facility until COVID-19 testing becomes widely available.

Mark Cuban explained the logic of his position to The Athletic.

"I’ll use the White House protocol," said Cuban. "The way the White House protects the president and vice president is the way that I want to protect our players and employees, you know? We’ll just try to just copy what they do as a means of knowing when the time is right. As of now, for all we know, for all we’ve been informed, anyways, they’re testing everybody. And they test their top people on a daily basis. And so they have access to the best science, the best information, and so it just makes sense to me that we just copy them."

Cuban, however, is "absolutely" optimistic testing will be widely available within the next two months.

"I just trust American exceptionalism, entrepreneurialism spirit and capitalism. You know, we’ll figure out a way because we have to."

Mavericks Tried To Sign Michael Jordan In 2001

May 7, 2020 1:23 PM

The Dallas Mavericks tried to sign Michael Jordan when he returned to the NBA for a second time and joined the Washington Wizards.

"I do have one Michael Jordan story," said Cuban. "The day he signed with the Washington Wizards to come back, right when I was buying the Mavs, David Falk said, ‘Why don’t you go meet him?’

“So I went to David Falk’s office and all the papers were there and I was trying to convince him not to sign them and to do something with the Mavs.”

Blazers, Cavs, Nuggets Will Re-Open Facilities On May 8th; Lakers, Mavs To Wait For Further Clearance

May 7, 2020 1:33 AM

The NBA has informed teams that they can re-open their practice facilities on May 8th if their city has loosened restrictions on social distancing.

The Cavs, Nuggets, and Blazers are among teams who will re-open their facilities.

J.B. Bickerstaff said that Cavs coaches will wear masks and gloves, with players and coaches required to stand 12 feet apart.

The Mavs and Lakers, meanwhile, will hold off on re-opening their facilities.

Los Angeles currently has a stay-at-home policy until May 15th. Frank Vogel did not have a firm date on when the Lakers would return, but said he was not concerned by certain teams returning early from a competitive standpoint.

"There's a competitive balance element to this that I personally am not really all that concerned about. I think we're still a long way away from returning to play," said Vogel.

Mark Cuban added that he was not comfortable with the Mavs returning without widespread testing, and that he has no immediate plans to re-open facilities.
