James Harden Says 'There Are Some Similarities' Between Him, Luka Doncic

Feb 28, 2021 12:30 PM

James Harden admitted that he saw "some similarities" between him and Luka Doncic following the Brooklyn Nets' 115-98 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

"There are some similarities. He never lets anyone speed him up, and he gets what he wants. That's rare for a guy at a young age. I think he's 21 years old. And to be able to dictate the game and control the game like he does, we all know he has a very, very bright future. The Mavs got a special one," said Harden after the game.

The loss snapped the Net's eight-game win streak.

Doncic had 27 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in the game, with the Mavs returning to .500.

Rick Carlisle also acknowledged the similarities between the two players.

"Harden has been in a situation the last few years where the offense has really revolved around him. With our team, it does around Luka similarly, but our style is a little different than Houston and Brooklyn. Both of these guys are generational-type players."

Mavericks Become First Pro Sports Team To Stop Playing National Anthem

Feb 9, 2021 10:08 PM

The Dallas Mavericks have stopped playing the national anthem before home games and do not plan to play it moving forward, Mark Cuban confirmed to The Athletic.

The Mavericks did not publicize the anthem’s removal and The Athletic was the first media outlet to reach out about the change.

Cuban declined a request for further comment or explanation Monday evening.

An NBA spokesperson told The Athletic on Tuesday that “under the unique circumstances of this season, teams are permitted to run their pregame operations as they see fit.”

The Mavericks are believed to be the first professional North American sports team to cease playing the anthem before games with fans in recent years.

Rick Carlisle After Luka Doncic's 42-Point Game: 'The Basketball Floor Is His Stage'

Feb 7, 2021 12:39 PM

Rick Carlisle compared Luka Doncic's impact on the court to Larry Bird and Reggie Miller following the Dallas Mavericks' 134-132 win against the Golden State Warriors.

Doncic had a career-high 42 points and 11 assists in the game.

"The basketball floor is his stage. Guys like him -- and I was around [Larry] Bird; I was around Reggie Miller -- when there's another guy on the other team raising his game to the level that Curry was, you feel an obligation if you're that kind of player. I saw Bird do it; I saw Miller do it," said Carlisle of Doncic following the game.

Steph Curry, who currently leads Doncic in All-Star Game voting, also complimented Doncic.

"His eyes lit up a little bit. He made some big shots tonight," added Curry.

The Mavs had lost 12 straight one-possession games before Saturday's win, the third-longest streak in NBA history.
