The Dallas Mavericks would like to create a roster spot to re-sign Theo Pinson this offseason.
Pinson emerged as a key locker room presence for the Mavericks, particularly with his animated presence on the sidelines.
Pinson appeared in 19 games with the Mavericks.
The Dallas Mavericks went further than anyone expected this season, but they aren't satisfied. In fact, Dallas could be set up to be a player in the free agent market by chasing Zach LaVine.
The Mavs do not have the cap space to sign LaVine outright, but could acquire LaVine via a sign and trade. LaVine was widely expected to re-sign with the Chicago Bulls, but he recently made it clear that he intends to explore his options as a free agent. There have also been reports that LaVine isn't thrilled with his role in Chicago.
The Atlanta Hawks, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs have all been mentioned as LaVine suitors as well. Like the Mavericks, the Hawks would have to create a sign and trade, while the Blazers and Spurs could create the cap space to chase LaVine directly.
The Dallas Mavericks are unlikely to embark on "an all-out pursuit" of Rudy Gobert.
The Mavericks have spoken openly about their need to improve their rim protection and rounding, but their often reported interest in Gobert is somewhat overstated.
Dallas sees Zach LaVine as the sort of player who would fill perhaps a more crucial need due to his ability to play off the ball as a spot-up shooter, but also penetrate off the dribble and cut to the basket.
The Mavericks would need LaVine and the Chicago Bulls to participate in a sign-and-trade, further complicated by their dearth of tradable assets.
Luka Doncic was disappointed in how the Dallas Mavericks season ended. Yet, he still took a moment to recognize what his team achieved this year.
"I don't like losing, especially like this," Doncic said after the series ending loss to the Golden State Warriors. "I played terrible."
After a moment of reflection, Doncic said the Mavs are "on a great path" and expressed pride in their season.
"If we talk about our season, I'm really proud of this team -- everybody, every player, every staff member," Doncic said. "Nobody had us here. But I promise we fought until the end. Congratulations to Warriors. They were obviously the better team. But I'm really proud of this team."
Doncic also recognized that for Dallas to take the next step, he has to improve. Doncic said this is especially true on the defensive end.
"I think defense has got to be way better for me," said Doncic. "Honestly, I think I made a huge step this year defensively, but there's so much room for improvement. I've got to be way better there. I think that's one spot that can take us to the next level."
The Dallas Mavericks went further than anyone expected this season, before ultimately losing in the Western Conference Finals. But Mavs coach Jason Kidd doesn't want his team to be satisfied with that.
"Now it's about, what is our appetite come next season?" Kidd said. "Are we going to tiptoe into the season or are we going to be hungry? Then, are we going to train this summer to understand what it means to play into May and June? Because it's a long season."
While Kidd didn't mention Luka Doncic, it's assumed that was a challenge for his superstar to come into camp in shape. Doncic showed up for training camp at over 260 pounds and spent the early part of the season playing himself into shape. His game, and the Mavericks record, didn't take off until the calendar flipped to 2022.
After the Dallas Mavericks were eliminated from the playoffs in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, Mark Cuban was asked about the free agency of Jalen Brunson. Brunson emerged as a proven playoff performer, particularly in the first round against the Utah Jazz when Luka Doncic was injured.
"We can pay him more than anybody," said Cuban. "I think he wants to stay and that's most important."
Brunson will be an unrestricted free agent after the Mavericks decided not to offer him a four-year, $55.5 million extension. Brunson will certainly receive a salary far higher than that total once he reaches the open market.
The Mavericks resisted trade offers for Brunson at the deadline in hopes of keeping him long-term.
