One Last Shot For Rodman?

Sep 30, 2004 5:25 PM

Vowing that he has changed his ways, the Denver Nuggets are giving NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman a tryout today to see if the 43 year old still has what it takes to play in the league.  Rodman, who last played in the 1999/00 season, vows that his attempts to get back into the league are so he can end his career in a positive light rather than being for more fame, money and attention.

"I just want my career to end on a good note," Rodman said. "I'm not coming back for the money. The money has nothing to do with it. I want to come back another year, maybe two, and show people that the game is still fun. I want to bring some entertainment back into the league."

He has gone so far, Rodman's agent Darrin Price says, that he gave up alcohol around a year ago.

"I have a job to do today," he said. "And once I do it, there will be no excuses."

Rockets Pick up ex-Denver Forward Bowen

Sep 28, 2004 11:26 PM

According to the Houston Chronicle ex-Nugget Ryan Bowen has agreed to terms with the Houston, continuing what many believe to be a terrific offseason for the Rockets.

Bowen chose the opportunity that sprang open when Bob Sura's back injury required surgery last week, accepting a deal sources said is worth $807,546 for one guaranteed season.

Bowen also expected offers from the Heat and SuperSonics before the start of their training camps next week, with the Nuggets, Kings and Timberwolves also expressing interest.

"I'm very excited about joining the Rockets," Bowen said. "I was just looking at all the possibilities. One of the possibilities was returning to Denver. But this was a good situation for me. I had a very good meeting last week with coach (Jeff) Van Gundy and (general manager) Carroll Dawson. Looking at the situation there, I thought it was a no-brainer. It was what I was looking for."

Desite his recent legal troubles, Denver GM Kiki Vanderweghe still has an interest in re-signing guard Rodney White, providing of course he can keep out of trouble.

"We're going to wait and see how things turn out," Vandeweghe said. "We just want to do what's best for Rodney. Obviously, this is a very hard lesson for him."

Vandeweghe believes the parties could reach an agreement soon, with the Nuggets also expected to sign free-agent guard Greg Buckner.

Denver also maintains an interest in free agent Ryan Bowen, who also has the attention of Miami, Houston and Seattle for his services.

Ingrown Toenail Shortens Rodman?s Nuggets Workout

Sep 22, 2004 4:09 AM

At the spry age of 43, rebounding guru, Dennis Rodman, is thinking about returning to the NBA.  His first stop, a workout with the Nuggets.

"(Rodman) wanted to come in and see where he was," Vandeweghe said. "He's thinking about playing again. He asked if he could come in and work out with the guys. He didn't work out much. It was more informal."

His workout was cut short however, as Rodman was forced to stop playing after only one game so that he could go to the hospital and get the toenail removed.

"I was curious to see how he would look," Vandeweghe said. "You couldn't tell, because he had the ingrown toenail."

Drexler, 42, said Thursday he is seriously considering returning to the NBA and lists the Nuggets as a possibility.

"If someone with a chance to win a championship would call, I'd consider it," said the 6-foot-6, 222-pound Drexler, a 10-time all-star who retired in 1998. "I know I could do it."

Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, a former teammate of Drexler's, is intrigued by the idea. He also has a roster spot available for a backup shooting guard and money available under the salary cap.

Carmelo in a Bar Brawl in NYC

Sep 16, 2004 5:41 AM

The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that sources have indicated that Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony got into a fight Monday at New York nightspot Club Babalou.

Insidehoops.com called it a "full-out fight." Allhiphop.com called it a "brawl" with tables "being . . . kicked over" and "chairs being thrown."

Both sites reported Anthony was with MTV host LaLa, and they ran into rapper Suga Ray, former boyfriend of LaLa. Both reported Anthony became involved in a fight after there was an altercation between Suga Ray and LaLa.

"We don't have all the facts, so right now the team has no comment," Nuggets publicist Eric Sebastian said.

Anthony's agent, Calvin Andrews, also declined comment. A New York police spokesman said police were not called.

Ryan Bowen Remains Unsigned, Despite Nugget Allegiance

Sep 16, 2004 5:39 AM

Ryan Bowen remains a free agent, but he's hopeful of being signed when training camp beings Oct. 5.

"I'd love to be back in a Denver uniform," he said.

The Nuggets, who have nine players under contract, have $2.3 million of salary-cap room. They plan to maintain that room, possibly until early October, to explore signings and trades.

"It seems prudent to wait since not many teams have cap room," said general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, who is holding off on signing players to minimum deals in order not to eat into cap room.

Vandeweghe offered no guarantees, but said Bowen is "very popular with me." Bowen is willing to sign for his minimum of $807,546.
