Balkman To Denver?

Jul 28, 2008 9:43 AM

"The Knicks and Nuggets are discussing a trade that would send 2006 first-round pick Renaldo Balkman to Denver for point guard Taurean Green and small forward Bobby Jones, an NBA front-office source told Newsday last night," writes Ken Berger.

Green and Jones might be waived if the deal is completed.

In an attempt to cut salary, the Knicks "are known to be looking to move [Zach] Randolph's contract, and are involved in other trade discussions with several teams."

J.R. Smith In OKC's Sights?

Jul 28, 2008 3:13 AM

Having missed out on C.J. Miles, could Sam Presti and Oklahoma City turn their sights to restricted Nugget J.R. Smith for help at shooting guard?

According to The Oklahoman columnist Darnell Mayberry, Oklahoma City was also interested in Tony Allen before Allen re-signed with Boston.

The Nuggets have said they will match any team's offer for Smith, but with the team already in the luxury tax they may be tempted to let Smith walk. Presti could employ a similar strategy as he did with Miles by setting the bar high and daring Denver to match.

Smith reportedly turned down a three-year, $10 million extension from Denver last fall, and because Memphis is the only other team with significant cap space, the Nuggets have leverage to not offer much more.

Carmelo Doesn't Understand Camby Trade

Jul 27, 2008 12:35 PM

Nuggets' guard Carmelo Anthony actually thought he was the one who had been traded before learning teammate Marcus Camby had been dealt recently to the Clippers.

"Everybody was blowing my phone up," Anthony said. "So I picked up my phone and called back someone who said, 'Did you hear what happened?'. I said, 'Where am I going now?' I was just laughing and joking [before the trade] about how much was involving the Denver Nuggets right now. So I was like, 'Where am I going?' They said, 'Camby got traded.' I said, 'Let me call you back,' and I got off the phone. It was tough to see a guy like that, especially for me, this is my fifth year and I played five years with Camby, it was like we almost started an organization together. To see a Defensive Player of the Year just leave like that for nothing, I still don't understand that."

Nuggets Get Dahntay Jones

Jul 25, 2008 2:51 AM

The Denver Nuggets came to terms with guard Dahntay Jones on a one year contract, the Denver Post is reporting.

Jones played well on Denver's summer league team, well enough to earn himself a guaranteed contract for the league minimum, around $1 million.

"I think George (Karl) is going to put a real emphasis on defense, defensive pressure, and Dahntay is a great on-the-ball defender," agent Mark Bartelstein said. "I think he will help them immensely that way. He's a great fit."

J.R. Smith Added To U.S. Select Team

Jul 23, 2008 8:32 PM

Restricted free agent J.R. Smith has been added to the U.S. Select team which will scrimmage against the U.S. National team, the Denver Post is reporting.

"I'm happy; it's a blessing," Smith said if his addition to the select squad. "Hopefully, one day I'll be able to play on the Olympic team."

Smith finished the season strong, averaging 18.3 points a game versus the Lakers in the playoffs. He is a restricted free agent, and the Nuggets have made a qualifying offer to him, ensuring their stance that they want Smith back.

"The work is definitely paying off," Smith said. "Even after the car accident it's just a blessing to be here today. It's not the Olympic team, but it's still a shot, and it shows that people are looking at me with respect."

Camby Still Upset At How Deal Went Down

Jul 22, 2008 2:37 AM

Marcus Camby was introduced as the newest member of the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, and he made it clear that he is still upset at how the deal from Denver went down, the Associated Press is reporting.

The Nuggets only got a second round pick in return for the player who has led the league in blocked shots the last three years.

"When I heard of the trade, I said, 'Who did Denver get in return?'" Camby said Monday at an introductory news conference.

Camby became the latest victim of a team trying to shed salary due to the luxury tax, which made him feel as though his efforts with the Nuggets were unappreciated.  There was also the matter of how Camby was informed about the deal.

"I understand this is a business," he said. "No one said a word [about the trade]; I found out from my agent."

"I thought the way [the Nuggets] went about it was classless," he said. "I thought it could have gone down a whole lot better. I'll get over it once training camp begins when I'm around the guys. You never forget. I'm definitely looking forward to those couple games we play against Denver."

J.R. Smith Receiving Little Attention

Jul 19, 2008 8:07 PM

Nuggets' restricted free agent J.R. Smith hasn't gotten much attention this month, according to The Rocky Mountain News.

"I haven't heard from anybody," Smith said Friday.

Smith said he hasn't gotten an offer from the Nuggets, other than the option to return next season for the $3.04 million qualifying offer.

"I'm not sure yet. I'd have to go over that with my people," said Smith, who said he plans to talk to his representatives "at the end of the month."
