Warkentien: NBA Setting High Standard For Personal Conduct

Aug 29, 2009 7:14 PM

Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien commented on J.R. Smith's seven-game suspension.

"The commissioner's office has made it clear that it wants to set the highest standard of personal conduct for its athletes," Warkentien said in a news release. "We will support J.R. as he continues to deal with the tragic accident he was involved with two years ago and the consequences of his painful mistake."

Smith was suspended after pleading guilty this summer to reckless driving during a 2007 auto accident that killed his friend, Andre Bell.

Source: Nuggets Want Szczerbiak

Aug 19, 2009 3:43 PM

The Nuggets are still in negotiations with free-agent forward Wally Szczerbiak, a source told the Denver Post.

Szczerbiak could fill the void left behind by Linas Kleiza, who left the team and signed with Olympiakos of Greece this month.

Denver is currently hovering near the $69.9 million luxury tax line, but they still need to sign two players heading into the 2009-10 season.

Carmelo Sues Former Business Manager

Aug 18, 2009 7:22 AM

Carmelo Anthony is suing his former business manager, alleging that more than $2 million of his assets were misappropriated.

The lawsuit was filed in a U.S. District Court in Sacramento, Calif. on Monday.

The suit alleges that Anthony's former business partner Larry W. Harmon, and employees of Larry Harmon & Associates P.A., breached their duties by transferring more than $1.75 million of Anthony's money without the player's knowledge or consent.

"I intend to aggressively represent Carmelo Anthony," his Beverly Hills-based attorney, Robert W. Hirsh, told The Associated Press. "The evidence which I have reviewed strongly suggests that Carmelo Anthony's former business manager plundered his assets. It is reprehensible that professional athletes are so often victimized."

Denver's $9M Trade Exception Expiring Nov. 3

Aug 17, 2009 7:25 AM

The Nuggets are over the salary cap, but they have a trade exception of almost $9 million that will expire on Nov. 3.

Using the exception would push Denver deeper into the luxury tax, but the Post points out that the team's window to win a title with Chauncey Billups won't stay open forever.

Early season trades are uncommon, but the Nuggets swung a big one when they sent Allen Iverson to Detroit for Billups on Nov. 3 of last year.

Warkentien: Carter Is A 'First Class' Guy

Aug 15, 2009 6:04 PM

The Nuggets were very happy to re-sign veteran guard Anthony Carter on Friday.

"This guy is first-class in every sense of the deal," Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said, according to the Denver Post. "He works every day, he understands the value of a practice session, a shootaround or a team breakfast video session. And you can't have enough guys like him."

Denver signed Carter to a one-year, $1.3 million deal.

"It's a great feeling ? this is what my family and I really wanted, and the Nuggets did a great job of keeping us here," said Carter. "We still have the main core, and it's a big thing to try to keep me here ? I know what I bring to the team, I know what the team needs from me, and I think we're right there to compete for the championship."
