Karl: Nuggets 'Special' With Lawson Orchestrating Offense

Jan 31, 2012 10:44 AM

Ty Lawson missed his third consecutive game because of a sprained ankle on Sunday night as the Clippers snapped the Nuggets’ six-game win streak. The Nuggets (14-6) still boast the second-best record in the Western Conference.

"When we don't have Ty, the versatility of the team, the confidence that comes with being short one of your best players, it's not how you lose the game, it's the confidence you don't have all the time," Karl said.

In the Denver style of basketball, Lawson is the centerpiece.

Karl wants the Nuggets to push the pace, and Lawson keeps that pace fast. The former North Carolina star keeps the Nuggets on schedule with what they want to do offensively and makes them more dangerous doing it.

"How we like to play and how we play efficiently is with a lot of speed and open-court quickness and aggressiveness," Karl said. "We did a good job of getting a lot of that into the game (against the Clippers), but we didn't get as much as we normally get into the game. Probably the efficiency of our pick-and-roll game, our penetration game, was down because Ty didn't have 20 of those possessions.

"Without Ty, it's above average. With Ty, it's special."

Extension negotiations between Danilo Gallinari and the Nuggets are "going well," a source said Sunday night.

Denver has been able to sign Nene and Arron Afflalo to long-term deals over the past few weeks.

If the Nuggets extend Gallinari, keeping Wilson Chandler will be difficult. Chandler is currently playing in China.

Andre Miller Not Pleased With Backup Role, Would Prefer To Start Elsewhere

Jan 12, 2012 10:42 AM

Andre Miller, who becomes a free agent after the season, said that he would "probably not" return to the Nuggets next season if the role is to back up Ty Lawson. But Miller wouldn't completely rule that out as a possibility if no better situations were available.

"At this point in my career, I don't see myself as a backup," Miller said. "For 13 years, I wasn't a backup before. This is a short season (due to the lockout), so I'll deal with it. But I don't see myself as a backup at this point in my career. I don't see that.”

Miller, who was Denver's starting point from 2002-06, was reacquired on draft night last June. There has been talk of Miller, 35, serving as a mentor for Lawson, 24, a third-year man. But Miller said Lawson doesn't need that.

"Ty, he's worked hard. He's had his mentor with Chauncey Billups," Miller said of the point guard who was dealt last February from Denver, which led to Lawson becoming the starter. "Why would they need me to come in and put in my two cents?"

Karl: Nuggets Modeling Team After Spurs

Jan 11, 2012 10:20 AM

Nuggets coach George Karl has a team patterned after the Spurs.

“It’s void of high-maintenance egos and attitudes,” Karl said. “I’m not saying that’s right or wrong about our game, but I’ve always kidded Pop about his having Tim Duncan and David Robinson. He hasn’t had the high-maintenance ego and attitude.”

According to Karl, the Nuggets’ roster is void of high-maintenance players.

“I think San Antonio has had a great philosophy of building with character, low-maintenance guys,” he said. “People look at our changes and say, ‘Who are you modeled after?’ I think our models were San Antonio and North Carolina. It’s where Masai and (owner) Josh (Kroenke) and I are, in terms of high responsible guys.”
