Karl Characterizes Lawson Extension Talks As Distraction

Oct 28, 2012 9:06 PM

Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets continue to discuss a contract extension.

“It falls under the level of ‘distraction,’” George Karl said Sunday.

“But that’s how our business is now. I respect both sides. I respect the organization trying to get something done and I’m sure they’re negotiating honestly and fairly. Hopefully they’ll come to an agreement.

“Ty is a point guard who is figuring out where he is in the marketplace. It’s business, and business is not the best energy for training camp. Basketball is the best energy for a training camp. But there is business in training camp going on all the time now in the NBA.”

Fournier Ready To Challenge Nuggets' For Minutes Immediately

Oct 12, 2012 10:30 AM

George Karl has been impressed with the play of 19-year-old rookie guard Evan Fournier from France.

"..Fournier, from the standpoint of being good enough to challenge guys to play the right way," said Karl about one of the surprises in training camp for the Denver Nuggets.

Fournier will receive minutes in Friday's game against the Spurs.

"It's just his makeup right now - he's courageous and ambitious and he does it the right way," Karl said. "He's a sponge from the standpoint of trying to learn. And usually he doesn't make mistakes twice, which is unusual for rookies in this league. He hasn't been yelled at a lot."

Karl Won't Make Playing Time Decisions Based On Contracts

Oct 12, 2012 10:15 AM

George Karl is unconcerned with how much his players make, particularly in reference to the center position.

JaVale McGee was re-signed in the offseason and makes significantly more than Timofey Mozgov and Kosta Koufos.

"I have no idea. The perfect scenario would be that JaVale would get (minutes) in the high 20s and Kosta and Timo in the low 20s, but I'm not going to predict anything. I'm going to go coach to win games, not to play big guys."

Karl was then asked about McGee being the Denver Nuggets' big offseason signing.

"You think that's ever influenced me? You think I give a (darn) about what they make? You honestly think that bothers (me)? The only time it's good to know what the players make is to demand they play like a $10 million player," Karl said.

Iguodala Didn't Enjoy Last Few Seasons With 76ers

Oct 11, 2012 9:26 PM

Andre Iguodala could have a breakout season in a new role with the Denver Nuggets following his offseason trade from the Philadelphia 76ers.

"I haven't really enjoyed basketball a whole lot the last couple of years," Iguodala said. "Last year was a big year for us, but it was just draining for the criticism to be there every single day."

Iguodala has been the best player in camp with the Nuggets.

"I went through so much to prove myself in every single training camp because a lot of coaches would come in and say, 'Don't shoot threes. Don't shoot threes. Don't shoot threes. Drive and dunk. Drive and dunk.' And I would be like, 'I can shoot threes!'

"So in Doug Collins' first year, I didn't shoot threes because he was like, 'I don't want you shooting threes, I don't want that shot.'

"Last year, I said, 'I'm shooting it.' And what happened? Shot 38 percent from three, top-25 in the NBA from three and I'm supposed to be a non-shooter. You put so much work in, and then to be told, 'Don't do what you worked on all summer.'"

Nuggets Continue Extension Talks With Ty Lawson

Oct 11, 2012 1:13 PM

The Denver Nuggets continue to discuss a contract extension with Ty Lawson.

Lawson is now represented by Happy Walters, leaving Leon Rose.

"I went through the same exact process, except I didn't take the deal," said Lawson's new teammate Andre Iguodala. "It's worked for some guys, but hasn't for others as far as being able to use your leverage. He's in a tough situation, but his biggest thing is to try to focus on basketball — because that's what got him to this point. He's got to understand that it's a business. He is very important to our team, and he knows that. When he's got it going, it's so easy for the other guys to do their jobs. It's going to be great to see him get it done and be with this organization for a long time."

Iguodala Quickly Leading Nuggets As Best Player In Camp

Oct 9, 2012 2:28 PM

Andre Iguodala has clearly been the best player for the Denver Nuggets during training camp.

George Karl said that Iguodala and Andre Miller have been the team's two leaders to date.

"You have to have a happy medium, showing them the hard word work, then leading by example," Iguodala said about being a leader. "And then you have to be vocal. I've always tried to find the happy medium, and it's more difficult than you'd think. And the young guys in the league now, it's a little different. When I came into the league, it was, Shut up and listen to the vets. But now you have so many young guys having a big impact on the game, you have more trouble having them adjust to the old guys and vets. But we'll see what happens with our young guys, we shouldn't have problems."
