Nuggets, Nikola Jokic Finalizing Three-Year Deal

Jun 30, 2015 1:39 PM

The Denver Nuggets are nearing agreement with 2014 second round pick Nikola Jokic on a fully guaranteed three-year contract, league sources told RealGM.

Jokic, 20, is expected to join the Nuggets for the NBA’s July summer league.

A 6-foot-11 center, Jokic was the Nuggets’ No. 41 selection a year ago and played one more season overseas. He was named the Adriatic League MVP for the 2015 season.

Jokic averaged 16.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and nearly one block per game this past year with Serbia’s Mega Vizura.

Mudiay Believes Injury Had More Impact On Draft Stock Than Playing Overseas

Jun 26, 2015 1:09 AM

Emmanuel Mudiay had to wait longer than expected to be drafted. Once considered a potential top overall pick in this draft class, he was rumored to go as high as fourth to the New York Knicks. He ended up going seventh to the Denver Nuggets, who already have an above-average point guard in Ty Lawson.

“They’re definitely up and down,” Mudiay said of his emotions. “You just don’t know, especially after Karl [Anthony-Towns] got picked, nobody really knew where they was going. But we’re definitely excited that I got picked to Denver.”

Mudiay was asked whether he felt his decision to play in China this past year, instead of at SMU, impacted his draft stock.

“I don’t think it impacted, I just think maybe when I got hurt,” he explained. “You could have got hurt anywhere, so when I got hurt I think that’s what made my stock go down, I guess. But I’m in the NBA, I made it in, so it starts right now.”

Mudiay is open to teaming up with Lawson.

“I can just learn as much as I can from Ty Lawson,” Mudiay said of how he fits with Denver. “He’s been there a while, so I’m just going to try to get as much advice as I can.”

Moments after the Nuggets selected Mudiay, Lawson posted a video of himself on social media stating: “Told you, I’m going to Sacramento.”

Ty Lawson: I'm Going To Sacramento

Jun 25, 2015 10:59 PM

A stream of Ty Lawson smoking a hookah and watching the NBA Draft surfaced.

In the clip, Lawson tells a friend before the Denver Nuggets’ first-round selection of Emmanuel Mudiay: “They’re probably gonna get Mudiay, then I’m gonna get a bunch of tweets about, ‘Yo, Ty, you’re getting traded.'”

Once the Nuggets’ took Mudiay, at No. 7, Lawson said: “Told you. I’m going to Sacramento, bro.”

Lawson also commented on other picks.

“Cauley-Stein getting drafted might mean Cousins is gone,” Lawson said of Kings big man DeMarcus Cousins. Lawson then sat back a inhaled the hookah as he awaited the Nuggets’ selection. He turned to the camera and said, “Tim Connelly, it was good.”

Lawson has been connected to joining George Karl with the Kings.

Nuggets, Heat Express Interest In Eric Moreland In Trade Talks With Kings

Jun 25, 2015 1:56 PM

The Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat have discussed deals with the Sacramento Kings involving forward Eric Moreland, league sources told RealGM.

The talks are expected to be centered on larger trade scenarios and bigger names, but Moreland — a 6-foot-10 shot blocker — intrigues the Nuggets and Heat, sources said.

Pete D’Alessandro and Mike Malone served as Moreland’s GM and head coach, respectively, this past season.

Moreland had a stellar summer league for the Kings a year ago, averaging 3.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in 19.7 minutes per game. He appeared in three regular-season games and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in January.

Moreland played his college basketball at Oregon State, going unselected in the 2014 NBA Draft before landing a multi-year contract with the Kings.

Nuggets Open To Deal With Picks No. 7, 57

Jun 21, 2015 1:43 PM

The Denver Nuggets appear ready to wheel and deal with the Nos. 7 and 57 overall picks in the NBA Draft.

"We want to be aggressive," Tim Connelly said. "We're looking at any and all scenarios, and we've already proactively made a lot of those calls. We'll see what we can do to make it interesting and hopefully give Coach the best team possible."

The Nuggets could decide between several players at No. 7, such as Justise Winslow, Willie Cauley-Stein, Mario Hezonja, Devin Booker, Cameron Payne and Stanley Johnson.

"I think what we've done a pretty good job in our time that we've been here is having a read for the draft, who's going to go where and who is going to be left for us," Connelly said. "I think we feel good about our target group; we're going to be able to get one of those guys. Now we're just picking those three or four guys apart further and making sure we haven't missed any of the details."

Blazers' David Vanterpool Interviews For Nuggets' Job

Jun 9, 2015 10:52 AM

David Vanterpool interviewed for the Denver Nuggets’ head coaching job.

Vanterpool is currently an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers under Terry Stotts. The Oklahoma City Thunder hired Vanterpool as director of player personnel in 2010, a role that had him on the front-office fast track until his desire to coach led him to the Blazers in 2012.

While Vanterpool isn’t considered a frontrunner to replace Brian Shaw, Denver general manager Tim Connelly’s discussion with Vanterpool in recent days is reflective of the respect Vanterpool’s earned in three seasons an NBA assistant coach.

Vanterpool interviewed for the Philadelphia 76ers’ head coaching job in 2013.
