Reggie Jackson: I Felt Like A Shell Of Myself At Times This Season

Mar 29, 2017 12:20 PM

Reggie Jackson had a frustrating 16-17 season in which he could never fully get back from the platelet-rich plasma treatment he underwent for his left knee tendinosis.

“Just felt a little different. There were plays I know I made in ’15 and ’16 and gaps that I could hit and had the confidence to get there at all times,” he said after Tuesday’s loss at the buzzer to Miami gravely wounded his team’s playoff chances. “And this season, at times felt good and I could get there, other times felt like I was a shell of myself.”

“He was absolutely dominant,” Van Gundy said. “He had a great summer.”

The Pistons were 11-10 without Jackson before his early-December return.

“I could see the gap and felt like I couldn’t get there at times, couldn’t explode there, couldn’t get there as quick,” Jackson said. “It was like guys are popping out of nowhere when they get back in front of the ball and get in front of me. Didn’t feel like I was quite the same.”

Jackson is hopeful of a silver lining in what has been a lost season.

“It’s tough, but I also think it’s going to be good in the long run, force me to have to play a little different, force me to have to expand my game,” he said. “I haven’t been great this season by the way that I measure myself, but without pain there wouldn’t be joy. I truly believe there’s light at the end of the tunnel and I see it with everything I’ve gone through so far. This season will all be worth it and will make everything that much more joyful.”

Nets To Pursue Kentavious Caldwell-Pope In Free Agency

Mar 22, 2017 1:12 PM

The Brooklyn Nets will make Kentavious Caldwell-Pope a top priority this offseason as he hits restricted free agency.

Caldwell-Pope has become the most important player on the Detroit Pistons over the past year.

“You can make the argument that he’s their most important player now. So I think that just shows you the impact that he’s had. He’s gone from defender to arguably their MVP,” said Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who was drafted by Detroit in 2014 and spent his first two seasons playing alongside Caldwell-Pope.

The Vertical reported Detroit doesn’t want to give him a max contract, but it may not have a choice. The Post has confirmed the Nets’ interest and ESPN intimated they would go that high to get him.

“I’m impressed,’’ Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said when asked about Caldwell-Pope. “I love how he competes, how he competes on the defensive end. That’s really the essence of what I see when I watch him play. He plays with force, he competes on the defensive end.

“On a given night he can get 35 on you easily. His speed off the ball, coming off those [dribble handoffs], flying off and somehow [you’re] going to have to find a way to stay attached, stay close to him.”

The Nets can offer Caldwell-Pope a four-year, $103 million offer, but Detroit can offer a five-year deal and still not hit the luxury tax.

Pat Garrity Considered Candidate For Magic GM Job

Mar 18, 2017 11:49 AM

If the Orlando Magic decide to fire Rob Hennigan but keep Frank Vogel as head coach instead of a more ambitious plan such as hiring Doc Rivers, Pat Garrity has emerged as a potential target.

Garrity is working with the Detroit Pistons under Stan Van Gundy.

Garrity played for the Magic from 1999 until 2008.

After his playing career was over, Garrity completed his MBA at Duke and worked for a hedge fund in Connecticut. Garrity returned to basketball in 2014 when Van Gundy was hired by the Pistons. The Pistons' analytics staff reports to Garrity and he also helps manage Detroit's cap.

Reggie Jackson Has 'Had Some Dark Days' This Season Before Tuning Out Media

Mar 6, 2017 3:03 PM

Reggie Jackson said he has tuned out all media the last few weeks, but he admitted he heard the criticism earlier this year.

The Detroit Pistons developed another identity when Jackson was out earlier this season after undergoing a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat his left knee tendinitis.

“I could probably not play for the next 10 games and we lost all 10, it’s probably going to be my fault,” Jackson said. “That’s the outside world, that’s the name of the game. That’s how it goes.

“I don’t really listen to it. I can’t control that. I’m just going to control what I control. When I come out here, I’m going to compete to the best of my ability and compete as hard as I can.”

There have been questions as to whether Jackson's drop in production is related to lingering knee issues.

Jackson and the Pistons say he’s fine, but Jackson thinks it more a matter of Van Gundy trying to diversify the offense, a decision Van Gundy made when he saw an ineffective Jackson.

“Maybe it used to (bother me), but that’s why literally I can’t recall an article I’ve read, I can’t really recall watching any interviews — especially since two weeks starting before (the NBA All-Star break),” Jackson said. “I’ve literally just learned to tune out all fans. I’m just coming in here, coming out to do my job each and every day. When this game’s done, it’s done, but I could really (not) care less about anybody else’s opinion anymore.

“I’ve had some dark days throughout the season, but I’ve turned off all the media, I’ve turned everything else off. I’ve been happier in life.”

Pistons Considering Replacing Reggie Jackson With Ish Smith In Starting Lineup

Mar 3, 2017 4:07 PM

Stan Van Gundy is considering promoting Ish Smith into the starting lineup over Reggie Jackson.

Van Gundy said the Detroit Pistons need better effort out of their starting point guard.

"He says he's fine, our medical people say he's fine," Van Gundy said of Jackson. "The difference right now is an energy difference. That's what I talked about with Reggie today. I think for us to be successful with him on the floor, his defense and his energy have to improve."

Smith averaged 9.3 points and 5.7 assists per game in February, and has gradually watched his minutes creep up to nearly 23 minutes a night.
