Bulls want a small forward

Mar 31, 2003 7:19 AM

Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Chicago Bulls? number one priority this summer is to acquire a small forward. Smith says the Bulls will likely target Sacramento forward Hedo Turkoglu, Golden State?s Mike Dunleavy, and Memphis?s Shane Battier.

Smith feels Turkoglu would be the easiest to acquire since the Kings will be hard pressed to give him an extension due to commitments to other players on the team. Instead of losing Turkoglu, who will become a restricted free agent at the end of next season, for nothing, he suggests that the Bulls could offer their number one pick in the draft, assuming it is not in the top 3, Dalibor Bagaric, and a second round pick to acquire the talented forward. Turkoglu is said to be unhappy about losing his job in the rotation to Jim Jackson.

"I know I can't complain too much because attitude is important and it would be stupid of me to get too upset when we are winning," said Turkoglu, averaging seven points in about 18 minutes a game. "I know the people back home [in Turkey]?my parents, the fans?they are wondering what is going on."

Dunleavy could be the next easiest option. While the Bulls seem to be committed to Jay Williams as their future point guard, the present starter is Jamal Crawford. Should the Warriors lose Gilbert Arenas to free agency, point guard would become a need position for the Warriors- who were desperate for Jay Williams last summer. The Bulls could offer Jay Williams in exchange for Dunleavy, solving a logjam at point guard for the Bulls and logjam at small forward for the Warriors.

"I'm happy where I'm at," Dunleavy said. "No matter how poorly I do or how bad things are, this is only my rookie season. As a rookie, I haven't really been able to play through my mistakes. So when it comes time next year or a time after that, I'm going to appreciate playing big minutes. This organization had its reasons for picking me, a lot of reasons that don't have to do with being rookie of the year. They're expecting more things down the road. In the meantime, I'll let everybody else pass their judgments."

Finally, Shane Battier could fit the bill. Jerry West is known for being a guru when it comes to the NBA draft, however, Memphis will lose its selection in this years draft if it isn?t number one overall. They will acquire Houston?s pick, but if they make the playoffs, West is out of the lottery. Chicago could offer its lottery pick, again under the assumption it is not in the top 3, and Marcus Fizer for the Houston pick and Battier.

Battier is becoming one of the NBA?s best shooters and would bring a good defender to Chicago.

"I knew I wouldn't be in the same situation as I was last year, playing 40 minutes, so I wanted to become a very efficient player," Battier said. "The guys on the team and the coaches appreciate what I bring. I just try to come out and be valuable for our team, not just take up space on the floor. I'm a little bit awkward, but I get the job done."

Martin injures knee

Mar 30, 2003 8:56 AM

New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin sprained his right knee after being fouled hard by Golden State's Antawn Jamison reports Liz Robbins of the New York Times.

Martin will have an MRI today to determine the seriousness of the injury. The injury occured the same night when Nets center Dikembe Mutumbo was returning to the lineup after missing most of the season with torn ligaments in his wrist.

While the team played well and still managed to win, the concern was clearly on the impact this could have going into the playoffs.

"This puts a damper on the win," Coach Byron Scott said. "Because not only did we get Dikembe back, but Kenyon was playing so great. He was really playing at a very high level, and to not know what exactly the situation is, it's not a great feeling."

Jason Kidd said: "He's such a strong person. He can take a lot of pain or play hurt, but when he said he couldn't get through it, then you start to wonder if it's bad."

One person, however, wasn't too concerned.

"Kenyon is one of the toughest guys I've ever met," Jefferson said. "He'll be fine."

Meanwhile, Mutumbo's return was one of the good signs amid the loss of Martin.

"I think that motivated everybody, to see a 7-foot-2 guy diving for the ball after just coming off an injury of his wrist," Kidd said. "I don't think he knows how much that sparked everybody on the floor."

Mutumbo said:"I didn't even think about it."

Warriors believe they can make playoffs

Mar 25, 2003 8:33 AM

Brad Weinstein of the San Francisco Chronicle reports: Despite being three games behind the Houston Rockets for the Western conference's 8th and final playoff spot, the Golden State Warriors still believe they can make the playoffs.

Today, the Warriors begin a road trip in which they will play at Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Portland.

While, it will be a tough trip, Gilbert Arenas thinks the Warriors can end their 8-year playoff drought.

"We can do it," Arenas said. "We have a run in us. We've been right there on the road, so we just have to do a better job of closing out games. It's getting down to the wire and I know we want it."

Mutombo set to rejoin Nets

Mar 22, 2003 8:52 AM

New Jersey Nets center Dikembe Mutombo is set to make his return to the lineup after sitting out most of this season reports Fred Kerber of the New York Post.

Mutombo was cleared by doctors to practice with the Nets for the first time in four months and could be ready for game action in as early as a week.

"They got a new teammate again. I was able to do the things that I have not been able to do all year long," said Mutombo, who tore ligaments in his wrist Nov. 28 and underwent surgery a week later. "It has been something I have been looking forward to for a long time . . . I will know in a week if I feel ready to go."

For now, the Nets are targeting next Saturday's game against Golden State as a possibly return date.

Boykins playing hurt

Mar 22, 2003 7:55 AM

Brad Weinstein of the San Francisco Chronicle reports: Warriors guard Earl Boykins has been playing hurt.

Before Friday's game against the Houston Rockets, Boykins admitted that he had  torn ligaments in one hand and sprained ligaments in the other.

He conceded that the injuries were effecting his play on offense and he would probably not be playing if the Warriors weren't in a playoff race.

"The thing is, when I'm out there running around and just playing defense, I'm fine," Boykins said. "It's more on the offensive end."

Boykins hopes to play the final month of the regular season and will then need six-to-eight weeks of rest for his injuries to heal.

Rudy-T gets bad news

Mar 19, 2003 8:24 AM

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports: Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich was diagnosed Tuesday with superficial bladder cancer.

Tomjanovich's doctors, including team physician Jim Muntz and urologist Richard Goldfarb, said the prognosis was good for a full recovery. Goldfarb and Muntz have discovered that the abnormal cells have not penetrated into the muscle in Tomjanovich's bladder, a very encouraging sign.

Even more encouraging is the fact that his treatment will not require surgery, but rather the use of a topical agent to treat the cancer.

"These are superficial growths," said Muntz. "Treating it with this generally works very well."

Tomjanovich is expected to take two weeks off and then begin treatments. The treatments, called "BCG" treatments, will be done once a week for six weeks. After the treatments, doctors will conduct further testing on Tomjanovich in the summer.

Players were notified of Tomjanovich's condition before Tuesday night's game against Seattle.

"There were a lot of long faces," Rockets assistant coach Larry Smith said.

"I did not want to hear that word," said Steve Francis, who lost his mother to cancer. "But finding this and taking care of it now will help him. They can treat him."

Tuesday night's game against Seattle marked the first time in 12 seasons that Tomjanovich has missed a game. He will likely miss tonight's game against Portland, but he hopes to rejoin the team for their road trip in time for their third game against the Golden State Warriors, which takes place on Friday.

Mills out for tonight

Mar 15, 2003 8:42 AM

Matt Steinmetz of the Contra Costa Times reports: The Golden State Warriors will be short a man when they go to Seattle to play the Supersonics.

Forward Chris Mills, who missed Monday and Thursday's games with left Achilles tendinitis, will sit out tonight and be further evaluated next week.

"Chris was key both defensively and, more importantly, when we played 'small ball,'" Coach Eric Musselman said. "He was starting to get an opportunity at power forward. Him being out changes the style of play. Now, Mike will get into the game quicker, at (shooting guard) or (small forward) and Troy (Murphy) will take earlier blows."

Mills' injury should open up more playing time for rookie swingman Mike Dunleavy Jr.
