Warriors Not Extending Baron's Contract

Sep 30, 2007 9:59 AM

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that there is no extension forthcoming from the Warriors for point guard Baron Davis, who told the Boston Globe last week that in the absence of a new deal by Monday, he will plan on exercising his option to become a free agent next summer.

Davis still has two seasons left on the $84 million, six-year extension he signed with the New Orleans Hornets in 2002, but if he's willing to forfeit his guaranteed salary of $17.2 million in 2008-09, he can gain his freedom.

"If there's nothing (contract-wise) and I have to play, I have to play," Davis, who was not available for comment Saturday, told the Times earlier this summer. "The way I look at it is, I have two years left on my contract. If there's an extension offered this year or next year, this is a place that I love. (But) I would like to know what my future is."

Sources: Warriors Will Wait To Extend Davis' Deal

Sep 29, 2007 6:36 AM

Talks between Baron Davis and the Golden State Warriors on a contract extension have been officially shelved by the Warriors until next summer, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Davis' agent, Todd Ramasar, was informed in a meeting with the Warriors this week that the club prefers to wait until after the coming season to sign Davis to an extension, even though that opens up Golden State to the possibility of losing its point guard and leader in the 2008 free-agency market.

Davis can opt out of the final year of his contract and become a free agent July 1 if he's willing to sacrifice his 2008-09 salary of $17.8 million.

Mavericks Name Elie Assistant Coach

Sep 28, 2007 8:06 PM

The Dallas Mavericks hired Mario Elie as an assistant coach on Friday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

An 11-year NBA veteran, Elie averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 732 regular season games with Golden State, Philadelphia, Portland, Houston, San Antonio and Phoenix. He also played in 116 playoff games and won three NBA Championships with Houston (1994, 1995) and San Antonio (1999).

Elie joins the Mavericks after serving as an assistant coach with Golden State for two seasons (2004-05 and 2005-06). He also served in the same capacity with the Spurs for the 2003-04 season.

"I am very excited to come to this great organization," Elie said. "I look forward to working with Mark Cuban and Avery Johnson, who's one of the best coaches in the NBA."

Pietrus In France With No Travel Plans, Still Pushing For Trade

Sep 28, 2007 12:28 PM

Mickael Pietrus is in France without any travel plans as his representatives make their final push for a sign-and-trade deal with the Warriors. The restricted free agent has until Monday to accept the team's qualifying offer of $3.47 million for this season, but plans to exhaust all other options before doing so.

"We're still trying to facilitate a move for Mike, like we have been all summer, that works out for Golden State and Mike," said Happy Walters, one of Pietrus' agents. "If that doesn't work out, we'll address that on Monday with Mike."

Vice president Chris Mullin says he expects Pietrus to arrive on Monday with the rest of his teammates and did not believe there would be any hard feelings to smooth over if Pietrus is forced to sign the one-year tender.

"We've had the offer for him, we've had dialogue here and there, so we'll see what happens," Mullin said.

Nelson Says Belinelli Has 'Stardom Written All Over Him'

Sep 27, 2007 11:37 AM

Don Nelson is apparently planning on inserting Marco Belinelli into the starting shooting guard position, a hole created due to the trade of Jason Richardson.

?I?m assuming Belinelli?s really ready to go,? Nelson said. ?The guy?s got stardom written all over him.?

Nelson believes Monta Ellis is too small to play shooting guard and is better served by playing the point position.

Pietrus' Status Remains Unclear

Sep 27, 2007 11:32 AM

The status of restricted free-agent Michael Pietrus remains unclear, less than a week before training camp. Pietrus' agents, Bill McCandless and Happy Walters, said several teams are calling them and the Warriors to discuss the fourth-year forward, but no deal has been struck at this point.

If Pietrus does not sign the Warriors' one-year, $3.47 million qualifying offer by Oct. 1, the deal expires and the team retains its right of first refusal.

Golden State Signs Troy Hudson

Sep 24, 2007 3:48 PM

The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent guard Troy Hudson, it was announced today by Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin.  Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

Hudson, 31, appeared in 34 games last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 5.9 points and 2.1 assists in 16.3 minutes per game.  He scored a season-high 26 points at Boston on March 4, one of three 20-plus point outings (also 22 at Phoenix on January 21, and 20 vs. New Orleans on November 18).  Additionally, his three-point field goal percentage (.350) marked the fifth time in the last six seasons in which he shot at least 35% from behind the arch.

?We?re excited to add a player of Troy?s caliber to our team,? said Mullin. ?He?s had a productive NBA career and, most importantly, will provide us with additional depth in the backcourt.  He has the ability to run a team and some of his other strengths ? such as three-point shooting ? will fit in well with our style of play.?

Jasikevicius Could Sign With Barcelona Or Olympikos

Sep 24, 2007 11:04 AM

Sarunas Jasikevicius was waived by the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. He was scheduled to earn $4 million this season, but the Warriors bought him out of his contract. He accepted less money for the Warriors to grant him his freedom.

A league source, however, expects him to sign with a team in Europe. F.C. Barcelona in Spain and Olympikos in Greece are the leading candidates to sign him.

Baron Davis Wants Extension Sooner Rather Than Later

Sep 23, 2007 9:59 AM

Baron Davis looks as slim as he's ever looked. "Just getting ready for training camp," he said. "It's the lightest I've ever been - under 213 - in a long time. I ain't been like that since my rookie year. I'm feeling good."

While lighter around the waist, the Golden State Warriors catalyst would like to be heavier in the wallet - and sooner rather than later. He technically has two years left on his contract, but he has a termination option for the 2008-09 season. He said he wants the matter cleared up before the start of training camp or else he plans to enter free agency next summer.

"There hasn't been too much talking. But in the next two weeks, I'm going to make a decision if I will re-sign or play the season out and be a free agent," he said.

"I know where I want to be. I know what I want to do. You just have to see if the team that you're playing for wants you the most. Hopefully, we'll find out that soon."

Through a spokesman, Golden State basketball boss Chris Mullin declined to comment.
