Warriors Exercise Options On Belinelli, Wright; Decline On Williams

Oct 31, 2008 3:46 PM

The Golden State Warriors have exercised the third-year contract options on guard Marco Belinelli and forward Brandan Wright and declined the fourth-year contract option on guard Marcus Williams, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today.

Under the terms of the NBA?s current collective bargaining agreement, the first two years of a first round draft pick?s contract are guaranteed, while the third and fourth year of the contract are the team?s option.  Belinelli was selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Warriors while Wright was selected with the eighth overall selection in that same draft by the Charlotte Bobcats and later acquired by Golden State.  The Warriors acquired Williams ? the 22nd pick in the 2006 NBA Draft ? from the New Jersey Nets on July 22, 2008.

Warriors Sign Don Nelson To Extension

Oct 29, 2008 11:40 PM

The Golden State Warriors have signed Head Coach Don Nelson to a contract extension, it was announced today by President Robert Rowell.  Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

?We?re elated that Don has elected to sign an extension,? said Rowell.  ?He has proven to be one of the most successful and innovative coaches in the history of our game and his continued presence on the sidelines is certainly a prominent asset for our team and organization.  Our fans and players enjoy his entertaining style and we all look forward to the day he establishes the NBA?s all-time wins record for a coach.?

Nelson, 68, is currently the second-winningest coach in NBA history (1,280 wins), trailing only Lenny Wilkens (1,332) on the league's all-time victory list.  Over the first two seasons of his most recent stint with Golden State, Nelson has posted a combined 90-74 record (.549) and guided the Warriors to their first consecutive winning campaigns since 1990-91 and 1991-92.

?I?m thankful for the opportunity to continue to coach this team,? said Nelson.  ?I?ve really enjoyed the last two years in the Bay Area and I?m excited about the future and the potential of our young team.  Additionally, I?d like to thank Chris Cohan, the entire Warriors organization and our great fans for their incredible support.  This is a special place for me.?

Last season, Nelson guided the Warriors to a 48-34 record, marking the team?s best record since 1993-94 and just the ninth time in franchise history (since 1946) and the third time since 1975-76 that the team has amassed 48 victories in a single season.  Additionally, Golden State?s 48-34 (.585) record in 2007-08 marked the best record for a non-playoff team since the NBA adopted its current 16-team postseason format prior to the 1984 NBA Playoffs.

Nelson returned to Golden State prior to the 2006-07 campaign, leading the Warriors to a 42-40 record that season and their first trip to the NBA Playoffs in 13 years.  Additionally, he guided Golden State to a First Round triumph over the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks, marking the first time that a #8 seed had defeated a #1 seed in a seven-game series in NBA history.

Entering in his 30th season as an NBA head coach in 2008-09, Nelson has compiled a 1,280-954 (.573) record in 2,234 regular-season games in 29 years.  Only Wilkens has coached more NBA games (2,487). In fact, as Nelson embarks on his 45th year in the NBA as a player, coach, general manager or consultant, only Wilkens has more combined games as a player and head coach than the 3,287 that ?Nellie? has registered in his career.

Harrington: 'I've Been Wanting Trade Since Last Season'

Oct 29, 2008 4:17 PM

Warriors' forward Al Harrington confirmed on Tuesday night that he would like to be traded and admitted that his desire to leave Golden State began last season.

"If you ask me if I want to be traded, I've been wanting to be traded since the end of last season," Harrington said. "With everything that happened in the summer and coming into training camp, I was hoping things were going to work out between me and [coach] Nellie, but I don't think that's going to happen.

"It is what it is. That's being all the way honest. That's putting it out there. Do I think that Al might have to be traded? Do I think it's going to work with me and Nellie? I don't think so. That's how I feel."

Harrington also explained that he didn't want to be a distraction to the team, but news of Coach Don Nelson's contract extension has him doubting that the two can make it work.

Undrafted Rookie Nelson Will Start For Warriors

Oct 29, 2008 7:56 AM

Undrafted rookie guard DeMarcus Nelson will start at point guard for the Warriors in their season-opener on Wednesday night.

Nelson will be the first undrafted rookie ever to line up for Golden State on Opening Night.

"After the songs are over, the guys announcing the names are over, you have to play the game," Nelson, a native of the Bay Area, said. "That's the main thing I'm focused on. There are enough things out there that we have to worry about as far as winning and playing good, so I can't get caught up in the sidelines."

Report: Harrington Asks For Trade

Oct 28, 2008 5:11 PM

Two NBA sources claim that Al Harrington has asked the Warriors to trade him because he doesn't want to play for coach Don Nelson anymore.

He reportedly wants to be traded as soon as possible, but will not walk out on Golden State, who opens their season on Wednesday night.

One source with knowledge of the situation said that Harrington?s agent, Dan Fegan, is "actively working to get (Harrington) out of there" and that a few teams already have proposed tentative deals.

Monta Ellis Plans To File Appeal

Oct 28, 2008 10:10 AM

Monta Ellis spoke out for the first time on Monday since the Warriors suspended him thirty games for injuring his ankle in a moped accident.

"While management and I do not agree on their actions, I want to be clear that my injury is based on my mistake in judgment," Ellis said in a statement released by his agent, Jeff Fried, "and I always accept responsibility for my actions."

Ellis won't accept the fact that his punishment is being left open-ended. He will file a grievance next week addressing the Golden State's ability to punish him twice for the same offense.

Team president Robert Rowell left room for more penalties after the suspension - such as the termination of Ellis' contract - should he not regain his previous form after rehab.

"I am working very hard to get back on the court and help my teammates and coaches win many games and recreate the playoff atmosphere of 2007," Ellis said in his statement. "We were as excited on the court as the fans in the stands, and I will continue to work hard to make you proud of the Warriors."

Nellie Agrees To Contract Extension With Warriors

Oct 26, 2008 9:22 AM

Warriors coach Don Nelson confirmed Saturday that he has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2010-11 season.

A league source said the deal is expected to be worth approximately $12 million.

"It wasn't my idea," said Nelson, who was only signed through the end of the season. "It was fine with me to wait or go year-to-year, but they came to me and wanted me to commit to three (total) years. I'm pretty excited about it.

"And it's quite an honor, really, to be wanted."
