Warriors Doubt How Ellis Injured Ankle

Aug 30, 2008 10:32 AM

The Warriors are in the process of checking the story of how guard Monta Ellis injured his ankle, according to Contra Costa Times.

Monta told the team last Thursday that he had injured his left ankle working out in Jackson, Miss. However, as of Wednesday, not even Chris Mullin knew exactly what happened. "I was told he was working out in Jackson," was all Mullin had to say.

Some team officials are rumored to believe that Ellis injured the ankle while playing pick-up basketball rather than simply working out.

Golden State To Tweak Offense While Monta Is Out?

Aug 28, 2008 11:38 AM

On the heels of the Monta Ellis injury, Chris Mullin met with Don Nelson on Wednesday and discussed opening up the offense and getting more shots for Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette, as well as asking Andris Biedrins to possibly take on a bigger role in the offense.

The Warriors are "talking about maybe spreading that ball around and getting scoring from different areas," Mullin said. "Marcus is more of a pass-first point guard (than Ellis). If at some point he thought he didn't get a chance (in New Jersey), he's going to get a chance now."

Warriors' Ellis Undergoes Successful Surgery

Aug 27, 2008 3:51 PM

Golden State Warriors' guard Monta Ellis, who suffered a Grade 3 high ankle sprain, a torn deltoid ligament, and a syndesmosis disruption of his left ankle last Thursday, underwent successful surgery today to repair the ligament and will be sidelined a minimum of three-plus months, announced today.  Ellis informed the team that he suffered the injury while working out in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Angus McBryde of the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

Ellis, 22, is expected to have the ankle immobilized for approximately six (6) weeks and spend approximately the following six (6) weeks undergoing off-court rehabilitation.    Based on his progress, the 6?3? guard will be cleared to begin on-court rehabilitation after the successful conclusion of the first two steps in the process.  A potential return date (to play) cannot be estimated until the initial 12-week period is completed.

A three-year NBA veteran, Ellis averaged a career-high 20.2 points (25th in NBA) and shot .531 from the floor (14th in NBA) last season.

Warriors' Jackson Waiting For Big Contract

Aug 23, 2008 5:46 AM

Stephen Jackson is waiting his turn in line for a big contract like the ones a number of his teammates received this offseason.

Jackson, 30, has two years and $14.89 million left on his contract, with $7.14 million of that total coming this season.

Jackson was slated to be the second-highest paid player on the team this season, to Al Harrington, but that was before the Warriors gave extensions to Monta Ellis (six years, $66 million), Andris Biedrins (six years, $54 million) and signed Corey Maggette (five years, $50 million).

"It's something I always think about," Jackson said recently. "It's definitely something that has to be addressed because of what I do for this team and what I've done since I've been here, bringing this team from one of the bottom teams in the league to a playoff team, to a team that won 49 games. It's not what I want, it's what I deserve...I won't be comfortable going into this season knowing I have to play this whole season being the fifth highest-paid and not get an extension. I would not be happy."

Jackson can't receive a pay increase midcontract, due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, but he is up for an extension.

"I feel real confident that I will have it soon," he said. "I will get something done soon, before the season starts.

"So in the position I'm in now, being the (sixth)-highest paid player, I feel like from the conversations I've had with the team that it won't be like that once the season starts."

RealGM Note: Jackson was 67th in season FIC and 'deserved' to make $8.84 million, giving him an impressive Reina Value of +31%.

Monta Working With Boxing Coach

Aug 19, 2008 12:46 PM

Monta Ellis is already preparing to meet the expectations of his new contract.

He is working on his ball handling this offseason and has plans to improve his endurance and strength by working out with trainer Virgil Hunter, boxing coach of undefeated super middleweight Andre Ward of Oakland.

"There's no workout like a boxing workout," said Ward, who is training for his December fight at Oracle Arena against Brian Vera. "It surprised me a little bit because there was no hesitation (when he was approached with the idea). "... The scary part about him is he's going to get better. When hard work and talent come together, great things happen."

"Monta is quietly confident, and it comes from getting his work done and not talking about it," said Warriors' Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin, who drafted Ellis No. 40 overall in 2005.

"He shows up in the best shape. You don't keep improving as he has just because. He works at it."
