Warriors Not Restricting Andrew Bogut, Treating Him '100 Percent Healthy'

Aug 29, 2013 3:44 PM

When the NBA season starts, the Golden State Warriors plan to treat Andrew Bogut as a fully healthy center who will not be restricted.

“I think the initial thought is he is healthy, and play him as much as you want,” general manager Bob Myers said. “If something obviously were to develop, something unforeseen, you have to react to it. At this point, you treat him like he is 100 percent healthy, that is what he is saying, that is what the medical staff is saying, so, you don’t treat him any other way.

"Maybe the question is, do you want to play him 35 minutes? But that is a question for any center. It is not due to anything with his injury. We’re approaching it like he is healthy.”

Bogut missed 104 games in the past two years and dealt with ankle issues last season.

Bogut had a significant impact in the Warriors' run to the Western Conference semifinals and is entering a contract season.

Warriors Face Increased Obstacles To Building San Francisco Arena

Aug 28, 2013 1:27 PM

The Golden State Warriors face several serious obstacles in building a waterfront arena in San Francisco.

The Warriors targeted a 2017 opening date when announcing the project last year.

"I think the Warriors have underestimated how high the hurdles for a project like this would be," said David Lewis, executive director of Save the Bay, a regional organization that has worked to protect San Francisco Bay for the past 52 years.

The costs of repairs to Piers 30 and 32 are now pegged at $170 million, according to a city memo obtained by The Chronicle, up $50 million from what had been projected.

The Warriors will release a third round of design in October as the project has changed engineering and design/architecture firms.

"There must," Lewis said, "be other places to build an arena."

Rick Welts, president of the Warriors, insists that the franchise is completely focused on the waterfront location beneath the Bay Bridge.

Stephen Curry: Individual Ranking Within Top 10 PGs 'Doesn't Matter'

Aug 24, 2013 12:40 AM

Stephen Curry has elevated himself in the conversation of the best point guards in the NBA, and he says he ranks somewhere within the top 10 -- no matter the position.

"Somewhere in there," Curry said. "It doesn't matter. What's the separation? From 1 to 10, is it that much of a drop off where you're like, 'Ahhh, I wish I was higher?' It doesn't make a difference.

"If you're in that group, on any given night you are going to play like you're the best. It's just who can be more consistent."

Curry believes players change depending on a specific criteria regarding point guards, but in his mind, the one constant in any debate is Chris Paul.

"I think the only consistent thing is Chris Paul is in the top two no matter what you say the criteria is, pretty much," Curry said.

Myers: Decent Portion Of Players Paid Less Than In Past

Aug 22, 2013 12:52 PM

Bob Myers was a player agent under the NBA's previous collective bargaining agreement and is a general manager with the Golden State Warriors under the new, more restrictive version.

"I think people are being more fiscally responsible and maybe a bit more conservative," said Myers. "Teams were not as aggressive on spending. The top-of-the-line free agents weren’t able to demand high-level compensation, though some of that middle class did get compensated as normal.

"Overall, though, I think a pretty decent portion was paid less than in the past."

The Warriors have never paid the luxury tax, but Myers indicates that their current ownership could pay it in the future.

"Our opinion, and I think most teams recognize there are only so many dollars to spend and the luxury tax is very punitive. Fortunately for me and our front office, we work with an ownership group that is willing to go into the tax if it makes sense competitive-wise.

"But that doesn’t mean you go in just to go in; there has to be a purpose to it."

Warriors' Front Office Approaches Job As 'Let's Try To Get Better'

Aug 22, 2013 12:46 PM

The Golden State Warriors somewhat surprisingly acquired Andre Iguodala this offseason. With Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes on rookie contracts to play the wing, the move was somewhat of a surprise.

"For us, we don’t really label our philosophy as much as just say, let’s try to get better, and if we see an opportunity that makes sense for us—financially, team-wise, chemistry-wise—let’s do it," said Bob Myers.

The Warriors also pursued Dwight Howard despite being considered a longshot due to the necessity of the Los Angeles Lakers agreeing to a sign-and-trade in those scenarios.

Stephen Curry Confident Postseason Progress Is 'Attainable'

Aug 19, 2013 3:09 PM

Stephen Curry is confident the Golden State Warriors can take another step upon reaching the Western Conference semifinals last season.

“We feel like we have a lot of momentum coming off last season, even though we lost a couple guys and added a couple guys," Curry said. "We can keep that same identity we’ve been trying to form since coach Jackson’s took the reigns of the team.

"As long as we stay healthy … we get Andrew Bogut back healthy, David Lee back healthy, add Andre Iguodala, allow Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes to continue to grow, sky’s the limit for us. We’re on a mission to do better than last year, and I think that’s attainable.”

The Warriors added Iguodala this offseason while losing Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry.

Source: Warriors Valued At $800M

Aug 16, 2013 7:07 PM

The Golden State Warriors are now worth $800 million in a new valuation, according to a source with knowledge of the terms.

The new term comes from the price Silicon Valley venture capitalist Mark Stevens agreed to pay for a share of the team that was made available when Vivek Ranadive had to sell it to buy the Sacramento Kings.

Stevens was presumably paying for the future -- not just the present.

The Warriors sold out 38 straight games last season and sold more than 3,000 new season tickets this summer to grow the season-ticket base to an all-time high of nearly 14,000.

The Warriors were sold to a group led by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber in 2010 for $450 million, though Larry Ellison offered a higher purchase price.

Warriors' Ownership Told David Lee Trade Reports 'Not True'

Aug 6, 2013 5:37 PM

David Lee was in some trade speculation this offseason, but he says the Golden State Warriors' ownership let him know that the reports were "not true."

Lee was in New York recently as part of a basketball camp.

“You never know what may happen in the future,’’ Lee said. “I love New York. That’s why I choose to come back for the camps.’’

Lee became the Warriors' first NBA All-Star last season since 1997.

Dwayne Davis Signs One-Year Deal With Murcia After NBA Interest

Aug 5, 2013 5:58 PM

Dwayne Davis received training camp deals from a few NBA teams, but the Golden State Warriors’ summer league guard signed a one-year contract with Murcia of the Spanish ACB on Monday, a source told RealGM.

Davis won’t hold an opt out in his deal, deciding to accept the club's offer of significant playing time and shifting his focus to pursue the NBA next season.

A 6-foot-5 scorer, Davis averaged 16 points and 4.5 rebounds in his last season at Southern Mississippi. Davis, 23, averaged 3.2 points for the Warriors – who were champions of the Las Vegas summer league – and had a 10-point performance in 11 minutes late in the tournament to garner further interest.
