Steve Kerr: Warriors Already 'In Offseason Mode'

Apr 28, 2020 9:09 PM

Steve Kerr admitted that the Golden State Warriors are operating as if their season is over. The Warriors have long been out of playoff contention with a league-worst 15-50 record.

"It feels like the offseason," Kerr said during a Zoom conference call in conjunction with the University of San Francisco on Tuesday. "And, in fact, we had a Zoom call, Bob Myers and I got on a Zoom with our players, our whole roster last week. And it was just a chance to check in, but it was also a chance for Bob to update the players on his contact with the league and the latest news, but it also kind of felt like our annual team exit meeting. Our coaching staff and I have been undergoing staff evaluations, offseason plans, so we are absolutely in offseason mode right now."

The Warriors remain in communication with their players and staffers but aren't preoccupied with a possible resumption of the season.

"The suspension came at an interesting time, and it really made a difference, depending on where your team stood in the standings," Kerr said. "So I've talked to some of my fellow coaches who are coaching teams that are right in the thick of the playoff hunt. They're trying desperately to stay in touch with their team, some of them are even doing group workouts on Zoom with their training staff, and they're trying to find hoops for their players to shoot at where they're able to do so.

"It's different for us because we were down to 17 games, but we were out of the playoffs. It feels like the end of the season for our team. It just does. We don't know anything officially. There's still a chance the league could ask us to come back and play some games, but given what we went through this season, with all the injuries and the tough record, it's been more of the case of we're staying in touch with guys, but everybody is just sort of assuming that this is kind of it. We're not going to be involved much anymore."

Warriors' Practice Facility To Remain Closed Due To City Ordinances

Apr 26, 2020 12:45 PM

The Golden State Warriors' practice facility will remain closed due to the city's social-distancing orders, league sources told NBC Sports Bay Area.

The NBA recently announced that they will allow teams to open their practice facilities on May 1st for individual workouts in cities with loosened restrictions.

The NBA will find other arrangements for teams in markets that have yet to loosen restrictions.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said on Friday that she would "very likely" extend the city's social distancing measures past May 3rd.

Draymond Green: Raptors Wouldn't Have Stood A Chance If Kevin Durant Didn't Get Hurt

Apr 23, 2020 7:41 PM

Draymond Green believes the Golden State Warriors would have comfortably defeated the Toronto Raptors in last year's Finals if Kevin Durant wasn't injured.

"Once we got Kevin, we were f--king unstoppable," Green said of signing Durant in 2016. "Even losing last year, Kevin don't get hurt—you seen the game he came back in Game 5, I looked up, it was like six minutes to go, we had like 40 points in the first quarter—and so they wouldn't have stood a chance if Kevin didn't get hurt."

Durant suffered a calf strain during Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals and returned approximately one month later for Game 5 of The Finals. Durant suffered a torn Achilles in the second quarter.

The Raptors went on to beat the Warriors in six games in The Finals.

Draymond Green: Kevin Durant's Free Agency 'Elephant In The Room' In 18-19

Apr 21, 2020 8:43 AM

Draymond Green saw parallels between the Chicago Bulls 97-98 season depicted in "The Last Dance" and the Golden State Warriors' 18-19 season.

"It definitely hit close to home," Green said on Uninterrupted's "WRTS: After Party" show with Paul Rivera and Maverick Carter, which was posted Monday. "Ironically, our season was the 20-year anniversary of that season. And we have a very important piece of our season, who was a piece of that season, which was Steve Kerr. I think Phil [Jackson] did what was great, which is acknowledge the elephant in the room. Because all year, if Phil doesn't do that, all year everyone else is dealing with that somewhere. And whether it's coming in questions [from the media], so now once you get these questions from the media, we've already addressed that as a team. We really don't need to talk about that. And our season was a little different from the standpoint of it was contracts, but it was on players. It wasn't necessarily the organization."

Green said the Warriors were waiting to see what Durant would do with his free agency in 2019.

"So, for instance, Kevin took the one-year deal on his own. So that was kind of the elephant in the room," Green said. "And although Steve's approach was like, 'Hey, guys, let's approach this year because we don't know what next year brings,' you've got Kevin's contract, you've got [Klay Thompson]'s contract, and I kind of got thrown in that contract thing, although I had another year after that year, which was this year. And so that was kind of the elephant in the room, and although Steve would kind of hit on it, [saying] 'Let's just enjoy this year for what it is because we don't know what next year holds,' it didn't necessarily carry the same weight because what should have happened was Kevin come out and say, 'Hey, man, this is it, so let's do this,' or, 'This isn't it.'"

The hope of Durant diminished as the season progressed, particularly after an altercation he had with Green in a November loss at the Clippers.

"But you can't just leave the elephant in the room, because what happened was the question came to us every day, like every time we spoke to the media, Klay and myself was asked about our contract," Green said. "It was strictly due to Kevin, because while that was going on, Klay was saying, 'I want to be a Warrior forever. I want to be here. We started this thing. This is where I want to be.' I'm saying, 'Yo, I want to be here for my career. We started this, we built this, I want to finish my career here with the guys I started it with.' And then you kind of had Kevin, [saying] like, 'I don't know what I'm going to do next year, and it don't matter'; but it does matter, because you're not the only person that has to answer that question.

"To be quite frank with you, you're honestly the last person that has to answer the question because you don't really say s---. Like, you don't say much to the media. If anything, you tell them to shut the f--- up. Well, I don't tell them to shut the f--- up. I kind of have a conversation, and so I'm stuck answering that question all the time. And due to that, there was always an elephant in the room amongst us, as opposed to with [the Bulls], they didn't have that elephant. [General manager Jerry Krause] had said it was Phil's last year. Phil had told them this was the last dance. Mike already said, 'Well, if Phil ain't coming back next year, I'm not either.' So everybody knew it was Mike's last year. They didn't have that elephant. Whereas I think we had a huge elephant sitting in the room, and Steve was trying to address it as best as he could, but it was kind of out of his hands."

Stephen Curry Reveals He Was First NBA Player Tested For COVID-19

Apr 17, 2020 8:57 AM

Stephen Curry revealed he was the first NBA player to be tested for COVID-19. Curry was tested on March 6th.

"I had just played my first basketball game in months the night before, and conversations were swirling about what this virus might mean for the league," Curry wrote. "That night, I started to feel sick. The fever set in. First at 100. Then 101. My first thought was, 'What are the chances? Could this really happen?'"

Curry's test came back negative.

"But that experience hit me, and it hit me hard," he wrote. "I'm fortunate to have the job I do, and not have to worry about all the many things crippling families across the country during this pandemic: unemployment, hunger, housing. How couldn't I use all of my resources and the full power of the platform my wife and I have built to help those desperately in need during this time?"

Joe Lacob: Kevin Durant's Exit Gave Warriors Chance To Move Forward Quicker

Apr 13, 2020 11:35 AM

Joe Lacob offered a new theory about the departure of Kevin Durant from the Golden State Warriors during a recent podcast with Tim Kawakami.

“This is really an odd thing to say, but him leaving when he did may have turned out to be the right thing,” Lacob said. “For him, certainly, I want him to have a good career, enjoy himself. He felt it was obviously not the right thing to stay. He wasn’t quite comfortable. I can’t explain why. I don’t know why. But for whatever reason, he moved on. But he wouldn’t have played this last year. He was injured. We would’ve had a huge payroll as a team. Maybe this is the best thing. We were able to start a rebuild a little bit earlier than we otherwise might have. Maybe it’ll prove to be the right thing in the long run that that occurred. I’m an optimist. I always look at things at what’s the positive in the situation. Yes, he left. That’s negative. But the positive is we got a chance to move forward quicker and to move into the next phase of what we’re doing.”

The Warriors acquired D'Angelo Russell as part of the Kevin Durant move and then converted Russell into Andrew Wiggins and the first round pick in 2021 of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Joe Lacob Unsure Whether Warriors Will Use Trade Exception, Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception

Apr 12, 2020 1:24 AM

Joe Lacob discussed how a lack of revenue from the current stoppage in play could potentially alter the Golden State Warriors team-building plans this offseason, including the use of a $17.2 million trade exception and a $6 million taxpayer mid-level.

“We’re looking at those questions and possible answers. But I don’t really have a good sense yet because I really have no idea how this is going shake out. We don’t know what the salary cap is going to be, what the luxury tax is going to be. So we don’t really know what we can plan on," Lacob told Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

Lacob took into consideration the team's current championship window with Draymond Green, Steph Curry, and Klay Thompson.

“With their ages, we’re in a certain window of opportunity and we’d certainly like to take advantage of that window of opportunity. So that was our plan. And still, until further notice, is our plan for next year and the next few years. However, a lot of things could change and we’re going to have to adjust just like every other team has to adjust to whatever the new world is in the NBA," said Lacob.

Lacob added that the team currently has no plans to ask employees to accept furloughs during the stoppage in play.

Lacob also discussed the Warriors upcoming draft plans, saying that he's open to drafting a player with their current position or trading down.

“We’re gonna look at all scenarios. Honestly, I’m not gonna hide this. We’re gonna look at drafting someone at our position. Maybe we trade down. That’s a possibility. I’m not saying it’s preferred or not preferred. I’m just saying it’s something we have to look at.”

Stephen Curry, Draymond Green Organizing Virtual Peloton Rides

Apr 2, 2020 4:50 PM

Stepen Curry, Draymond Green and several other members of the Golden State Warriors have Peloton bikes at their homes and have been participating in morning virtual group rides.

“In the Tour de Warriors,” Curry said, “I’m above average, but I’m not on the podium yet. I have to figure out how to get there. There’s always something to shoot for.”

Green is known to be a stationary bike enthusiast for several years.

“You walk out feeling sweaty, feeling good like you got a workout in, but it doesn’t put much strain on the body," the three-time NBA champion told NBC Sports Bay Area's Kerith Burke about one year ago. "Sometimes it’s good to get away from the game of basketball or the typical weight room.

“You’re working out with a different group of people, you’re all on rhythm, trying to stay on the beat with each other. When you add music to a workout, it’s fun. I do it a lot with my fiancée, and we have a good time. We sit next to each other. She’s really good at it.”

Letourneau adds that the Warriors would be open to trading the pick, but will draft Edwards if they don't get worthy offers.
