Tyrese Haliburton: Being The Full-Time Point Guard Is Everything I Ever Wanted

Oct 19, 2022 11:12 AM

Tyrese Haliburton was initially surprised by his trade from the Sacramento Kings to the Indiana Pacers, but he seems to be embracing his status as the franchise's foundational piece.

"Sacramento was great," Haliburton told Zach Lowe of ESPN. "I wasn't ready to be a full-time point guard when I got there. Playing with [De'Aaron] Fox helped. But now, this is everything I ever wanted. I get to be the full-time guy. I love this."

"In the modern game, where guys love to hold the ball, he's an outlier," says Rick Carlisle, Indiana's coach.

But the Pacers also need Haliburton to score.

"This whole summer has been about challenging my mind and become more of an a--hole in a sense, offensively," Haliburton said.

Pistons Likely Would Have Pursued Deandre Ayton If Jalen Duren Wasn't Drafted

Oct 11, 2022 9:16 PM

The Detroit Pistons were linked to a potential pursuit of Deandre Ayton this offseason, but the availability of Jalen Duren at the draft is believed to have led them to change direction.

"The Ayton thing, I think they were going to be the Ayton offer sheet team until Jalen Duren fell to them at 13," said Zach Lowe. "Which I don't think they expected to be in play for them at that level. I mean I know they didn't. And once that happened, I think they said 'Okay, we're just going to roll with what we got. We're not going to clutter our center rotation.'

"Absent that, if they don't get Duren, I think they would have been the Ayton offer sheet team. I would have loved that move for them."

Ayton lingered in his restricted free agency before signing a four-year, $133 million offer sheet with the Indiana Pacers that was swiftly matched by the Phoenix Suns.

LeBron James Applying No Pressure On Lakers To Trade For Myles Turner, Buddy Hield

Oct 3, 2022 2:25 PM

LeBron James has applied no pressure to the Los Angeles Lakers' front office to move forward with a trade for Myles Turner and Buddy Hield, sources tell The Athletic.

James remains supportive of the current regime of the Lakers.

Seven months have passed since James’ tweet supporting the “f— them picks” approach of Los Angeles Rams GM Les Snead led some to wonder how he saw the Lakers’ strategy.

James has already committed to the Lakers in the form of an extension, while Rob Pelinka has made it clear that the franchise will do everything possible to maximize their odds of contending while James remains on the team.

Lakers, Pacers Engaged In Serious Russell Westbrook Talks Right Before Start Of Camp

Oct 3, 2022 11:53 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers did not find a workable trade of Russell Westbrook this offseason, but sources tell The Athletic that "the prospect of him being traded in the coming weeks and months remains real."

The Lakers are trying to make the Westbrook situation as productive as possible in the meantime under Darvin Ham.

On the cusp of training camp, the Lakers were engaged with the Indiana Pacers on deep conversations on a Westbrook trade. The Lakers seriously considered sending Westbrook and unprotected picks in 2027 and 2029 to the Pacers for Myles Turner and Buddy Hield. Every conversation the Pacers have had with the Lakers has led to the demand of both available first round picks.

The Lakers have tried to acquire Turner and Hield for one first round pick plus second round pick compensation.

The talks were serious enough for the Lakers to delay a midweek news conference for Rob Pelinka and Ham.

Pelinka was given the authority to make the ultimate decision, but they wanted to reach a consensus. Joey Buss and Jesse Buss are being considered among the leaders of the front office more than ever and contributed to the debate.
