Vinny Del Negro believes he'll return to coach the Los Angeles Clippers next season and says that his future isn't tied to the club's postseason success.
"No, my future is great," Del Negro said. "I got a great future no matter what. I've been pretty fortunate, so I don't worry about that stuff so much. All those things take care of themselves. Wherever we finish, we're going to be prepared, we're going to be organized and we're going to play hard."
Del Negro isn't under contract past this season and the Clippers haven't discussed an extension with him.
"The expectations, sometimes, people get a little delusional in terms of how you're going to get there and what you're going to do," he said. "People get sick of the word 'process' but that's what it is. It's a long NBA season. You got to handle the injuries. You got to handle a lot of things. I feel we're in a pretty good position right now."
The Los Angeles Clippers have signed forward DaJuan Summers to a second 10-day contract.
Summers has appeared in two games for the Clippers, averaging 1.0 points and 1.0 rebounds in 3.5 minutes of action.
Summers averaged 18.0 points and 7.6 rebounds in 33.1 minutes of action for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League this season over 29 games.
The Los Angeles Clippers have fallen from sixth in defensive efficiency before the All Star break to 17th after, with Vinny Del Negro and Blake Griffin divided about whether a lack of urgency or inconsistent strategy is to blame for the slide.
"Our bigs are getting stretched out a little bit," Del Negro said. "They have to have a little sense of urgency in closing out. Some guys can make that adjustment, and some guys are struggling with that but we drilled it again today. That's obviously an area of concern."
Griffin disagreed with Del Negro.
"It depends on our defensive strategy and our defensive principles for that game," Griffin said. "We switch them every single game. I don't see that, no, but I'm biased.
"We want our identity to be a defensive team," Griffin continued. "We don't want to have to make adjustments for every single team and switch things up but to make teams adjust to us and the way we play."
The Los Angeles Clippers have signed guard Maalik Wayns to a second 10-day contract.
Wayns appeared in one game for the Clippers, scoring two points and dishing out five assists in a 129-97 win over the Detroit Pistons on March 10.
Wayns averaged 12.4 points and 3.0 assists in nine games (three starts) for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League this season.
The Los Angeles Clippers have signed DaJuan Summers to a 10-day deal.
A 6-foot-8 forward, Summers averaged 18.0 points and 7.6 rebounds in 33.1 minutes with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League.
Summers was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 35th overall pick of the 2009 draft.
The Los Angeles Clippers are 6-4 since the All-Star break and opponents are averaging 106.3 points per 100 possessions during that span -- a mark that would rank 18th overall.
Blake Griffin said it will be imperative for the Clippers to adopt an aggressive defensive mentality as the team moves into the final 16 games of the regular season.
“I think it’s defense,” Griffin said. “When we were winning games, we had that streak going and before that, I thought the way we played defensively was aggressive. We messed up at times, our rotations weren’t great at times, but I thought we did a great job of forcing teams to figure out what they were going to do against our defense.”
The Clippers have struggled with their three-point defense, allowing opponents to shoot 37.5 percent from distance this season.
In their last four losses the Clippers have allowed opponents to shoot 43.8 percent from beyond the arc.
“We can do a better job of guarding the three,” Griffin said. “That’s been our downfall in games that we’ve lost, you know, poor three-point defense. It’s something that we have to address.”
The Los Angeles Clippers intend to sign DaJuan Summers of the D-League.
The Clippers waived Trey Thompkins on Thursday.
The Los Angeles Clippers have waived Trey Thompkins.
Thompkins was the 37th overall pick by the Clippers out of Georgia in 2011.
Thompkins did not appear in a game this season due to a left knee bone bruise.
The NBA community stopped what it was doing on Sunday night as it was mesmerized by a DeAndre Jordan lob dunk from Chris Paul on Brandon Knight.
"It was a great pass by Chris, and honestly, I didn't see Brandon until I caught the ball," Jordan said. "After that, was just, yeah."
The dunk was universally shared across various social media platforms.
"That was the best dunk of the year," Blake Griffin said. "It's the best dunk I've seen in person."
