Clippers Using Augmented Graphics To Enhance Broadcast

Oct 19, 2018 5:21 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have partnered with Second Spectrum to bring augmented graphics to their telecasts this season.

CourtVision uses machine learning, data visualization, and augmented reality to enhance the broadcast.

“What we wanted to do required a machine to understand the game like a coach or a human, then augment it,” Second Spectrum CEO Rajiv Maheswaran said. “John Madden taught us a lot about football, and, because of the breaks in the game, he drew a lot on the screen. We want to bring the same thing to basketball.”

“No one understands the intersection of sports media and technology better than Steve Ballmer, and every team will benefit from the pioneering work that he and Second Spectrum are doing to enhance the game experience. I look forward to seeing the results.”

Second Spectrum’s goal is for everyone to watch sports in this way in the future.

“There will be a day we look back and say, ‘I can’t believe we used to watch everything the same way at the same time,’” Maheswaran said. “This is the start of that. It’s like rolling off the first car or computer. It’ll get a lot better, but the first one that ships off the factory line is super exciting.”

Woj: Clippers Have Strong Chance Of Signing Kawhi Leonard

Oct 18, 2018 1:15 PM

Kawhi Leonard was linked to the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason when he was on the trade block as the destinations he preferred in his 2019 free agency.

"What the Clippers are doing right now is very below the radar," said Adrian Wojnarowski on his podcast with Zach Lowe. "What they've done to put themselves in position. They didn't gut themselves and they're not tanking. They're putting a competitive team on the floor.

"I think, right now, with Kawhi Leonard, they have a better than not chance of getting him. We know things will change. He could love Toronto."

Wojnarowski added that maybe the situation could change if the Raptors reach The Finals.

"The Clippers are in great position with (Leonard)," said Wojnarowski. "They have two max slots. They will be heard from again, I think, in these Jimmy Butler trade talks."

Wojnarowski added he believes the Clippers have done a good job in collecting hard playing role players that stars want to play with.

The Clippers have also been strongly linked with a pursuit of Kevin Durant in free agency.
