Clippers Project To Have $54M-$75M In 2019 Cap Space

Feb 27, 2019 11:48 AM

The Los Angeles Clippers project to have between $54 million and $75 million in cap space this offseason.

"It's hard to do," Doc Rivers said of being an organization in competitive transition. "Fortunately, because of that big three, we were able to get enough out of that to pretty much stay competitive, and because of those guys, we were able to get things."

During a series of brainstorming sessions in September of 2017, the Clippers debated whether they could be a competitive top-four seed during the next four- to six-year period. Lawrence Frank, Michael Winger and Jerry West concluded that would be an unlikely scenario with their current roster, which led to the Blake Griffin trade and not keeping DeAndre Jordan long-term.

The Clippers didn't initially have 2019 in mind to pursue free agents until Kawhi Leonard wanted out of San Antonio with Los Angeles as his preferred landing spot, as well as free agents such as Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving having uncertain situations.

Steve Ballmer On Building New Clippers Arena: 'We Need Our Own House'

Feb 23, 2019 8:46 PM

Steve Ballmer reiterated the importance of the Los Angeles Clippers having their own arena.

The team is currently proposing a stadium in Inglewood, although there still remains several hurdles in the process.

[We] need our own house...we’re going through the permitting process. And an environmental process, and we’re going through that right now. We have some folks pushing back on us, primarily Madison Square Garden and the Knicks, if you will. They own The Forum, which is a concert venue, and they don’t want to see a new concert venue, which any new basketball arena would be. So we’re getting some pushback," said Ballmer.

Ballmer set 2024 as his target date for a new space, and says he wants to build an arena for basketball fans.

“We’re not putting hockey in the building. I don’t think most people know just how big a difference it can make to not have hockey. You get everybody closer to the floor. The sightlines are a lot better. We’re talking about how much leg room to give people, how much width. I like energy. I want people pumping and thumping in the seats. But you’ve still got to have some bars and clubs. We’re trying to pull you back in. Some buildings, in my opinion, try and push you out a little bit to the bars and clubs. Then it’s more of a different kind of social experience. We’re trying to support both. But we want people who really love the game in the building.”

Kristaps Porzingis Had Nets, Clippers, Heat, Raptors On Trade Wish List

Feb 13, 2019 9:33 AM

Kristaps Porzingis had a wish list of four teams for a potential trade with the Dallas Mavericks omitted.

Porzingis had the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors on his list, according to two people with knowledge of the list.

The initial reporting following the trade indicated that Porzingis planned to sign the qualifying offer with the Mavericks as a restricted free agent. Comments made since then have suggested a long-term deal between the Mavericks and Porzingis now has a better probability.

Clippers Don't Consider Jimmy Butler One Of Their Top Free Agent Targets

Feb 8, 2019 3:18 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers are not expected to have Jimmy Butler as one of their top-tier targets in free agency. Butler may not even be pursued at all by the Clippers.

The Clippers are known to prefer Kawhi Leonard and Kevin Durant for their 2019 free agency.

Butler was traded by the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Philadelphia 76ers in November. With the cost to acquire Butler and the ability to offer him an extra season, the 76ers are widely considered the frontrunners to re-sign him.

Butler has had strong ties to Los Angeles over the years.

Clippers Didn't Acquire FRPs From 76ers Specifically For Anthony Davis Trade

Feb 6, 2019 8:41 AM

The Los Angeles Clippers acquired two future first round picks from the Philadelphia 76ers in their trade of Tobias Harris.

The Clippers are on the list of teams Anthony Davis would be willing to commit to long-term if traded, but the team didn't execute the Harris trade specifically to pursue Davis.

The Pelicans could have interest in receiving the two new picks as part of a Davis trade with the Clippers either before Thursday's deadline or in the offseason.

The Clippers considered Harris a max level player on the open market and that would interfere with their pursuit of several All-NBA-caliber players.
