Doc Rivers On Clippers: 'I Plan On Being Here A Long Time'

Mar 20, 2019 12:40 AM

Doc Rivers brushed off rumors linking him to the Los Angeles Lakers by saying that he and Steve Ballmer verbally agreed to a contract extension earlier this season.

"Well, I have a job and the Lakers have a coach, No. 1, and I am going nowhere. I can tell you that. Straight and up front, I'm going to be here until (Clippers owner) Steve (Ballmer) says get out. I plan on being here a long time," said Rivers.

Rivers added that while he and Magic Johnson are friends, he still has unfinished business with the Clippers.

"Just so we won't talk about this for a while, let me end this right now: (Lakers president) Magic Johnson and I are very close friends, as you know, and that's what we are. (But) early in this year, we (Ballmer and I) both decided let's end this thing. Take this (option) out and extend and make it a longer deal. We've long decided on that. We just have chosen not to say anything about it. I'm here. My job is not done here."

Doc Rivers, Lakers Have Mutual Interest

Mar 19, 2019 8:45 AM

Doc Rivers and the Los Angeles Lakers have mutual interest, according to a report from Peter Vecsey on his Patreon. Vecsey's report follows a suggestion from Stephen A. Smith that Rivers could be pursued by the Lakers.

The Lakers are widely expected to fire Luke Walton at the end of the season.

"According to a confidant, he almost always has wanted to leash the Lakers," wrote Vecsey. "In conversations over the years, Doc frequently expressed an ardent ambition to coach either them, or the Knicks before retiring, if for no other motivation than their worldwide brands."

Rivers is currently under contract with the Los Angeles Clippers through the 20-21 season after signing an extension in May of 2018.

Zach LaVine Offers To Pay Jim Boylen's Fine

Mar 17, 2019 11:59 AM

The Chicago Bulls will let Zach LaVine pay Jim Boylen's fine for getting ejected from a game, pending league rules.

NBA rules stipulate that the person receiving the fine must pay it. Boylen is expected to be fined $7,000 - $5000 for two technical fouls and $2000 for the ejection.

Boylen was ejected after arguing with Doc Rivers about how the Clippers were setting screens during the game.

"What Jim did, I personally respect that a lot. He really cares about us and he's going to fight for us. That shows his true character the way he feels about us," said LaVine.

Lakers Considered Return To Forum After Approach From Irving Azoff

Mar 14, 2019 11:52 AM

Irving Azoff floated an idea in 2017 to Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis about the Los Angeles Lakers moving back to the Forum.

“Heres my dream,” Azoff emailed Buss and Rambis on June 14, 2017. “Rebuild the forum from scratch. Lakers plus music. boom.”

Azoff appeared motivated to bring the Lakers in as a way of blocking Steve Ballmer from building an arena in Inglewood for the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Lakers, however, are believed to be discussing an extension to their Staples Center lease that runs through the 24-25 season.

“MSG approached the Lakers about the possibility of returning to the Forum following the end of our Lease at Staples Center in 2025, but nothing came from the discussions,” the Lakers said in a statement.

Buss responded a half-hour later to the email from Azoff, who has close business ties with the Forum and its owner, Madison Square Garden Co., the New York-based sports and entertainment giant.

“I think about the vision you and [wife] Shelli had when you re-imagined the Forum and how you made it happen,” Buss wrote. “I believe you can do anything.”

The Lakers left the Forum for Staples Center in 1999.

In a statement, MSG said it “approached the Lakers about the possibility of repurposing the Forum in the future to accommodate basketball once again, but ultimately nothing came of it.”

Kyrie Irving Offers Effusive Praise Of Doc Rivers

Mar 12, 2019 9:08 AM

Kyrie Irving was asked for his thoughts on the Los Angeles Clippers' season and turned it into a ringing endorsement for Doc Rivers.

"It's so easy to play for a guy that's been a player in this league," said Irving of Rivers.

"He's won a championship and he's done unbelievable things in this league for his players while giving them confidence to go out there and be who they are.

"Lou (Williams) signed an extension for a reason, and that's Doc. He puts those guys in position, gives them the freedom and keeps them encouraged throughout the whole game -- especially when they're at home."

Rivers had a 13-year NBA playing career while Brad Stevens played collegiately at DePauw.

The Los Angeles Clippers plan to pursue multiple max level free agent this offseason.

Lou Williams Passes Dell Curry For Most All-Time Points By Reserve

Mar 12, 2019 8:38 AM

Lou Williams passed Dell Curry for the most career points scored by a reserve.

Williams entered the night trailing Curry (11,147) by 27 points. Williams passed Jamal Crawford for second all-time on Friday.

"Anytime you can say to have 'of all time' next to your name, no matter what it is, it's special," Williams said of becoming the the NBA's most prolific scorer off the bench. "With being a sixth man and being a career bench player, to have an opportunity to be something that says ever at the end of it is special to me."

"It's amazing," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said before the game. "If you're anything that ends in 'ever' in the NBA, that's pretty impressive. ... The way Lou does it with his size and his shot, but more importantly how much he finishes in the paint, I think that is what surprises me the most since coaching him is how often he gets in the paint and finishes over bigs. It's just remarkable."
