Doc Rivers: Best Way For Clippers To Honor Kobe Bryant Is To Win Championship

Jan 31, 2020 11:21 AM

Kobe Bryant's only connection with the Los Angeles Clippers was when he considered signing with the team in 2004, but Doc Rivers believes his team can pay tribute to Bryant by winning the 2020 Finals.

"The best way if you want to honor Kobe, and we talked about this even on Sunday, is to go win," Rivers said before the Clippers lost to the Sacramento Kings. "Not just win tonight, but win it.

"So that's our journey. It was already our journey, and then this happens, and I think our guys understand if you really want to salute him, he made a lot of sacrifices to be a winner, Kobe did. ... And so for us to win, we're going to have to do the same thing, otherwise we will not win. So I think that's our journey now, as well."

The Clippers left Bryant's retired jerseys uncovered and had a spotlight shining on them throughout the game.

Paul George Considering Changing Uniform From No. 13 To No. 24

Jan 30, 2020 9:24 PM

Paul George originally wore the No. 24 when he entered the NBA before eventually switching to No. 13.

George is looking into potentially switching his number back to No. 24 as a tribute to Kobe Bryant.

“I thought it was great,” George said. “I thought it was great. I seen guys doing it across the league. I actually reached out and see if I could bring 24 back, just because I always want to remember why I started playing this game. And that meant so much to me. You know, so, now I sit back and review it. I think every time should find a way to honor that. Let that jersey be a number that no one would be able to wear again. So we’ll see.”

George grew up outside Los Angeles and idolized Bryant.

“The biggest thing is just me doing what I’m doing now,” George said. “If there was no Kobe Bryant, I don’t know who I would’ve looked at and idolized. So when I think about me and basketball and how I got started, first story to be told is, you know … and for the generation after myself, for young kids who won’t know who Kobe Bryant is, it’ll be an amazing story to tell, that I picked his ball up because of this man.

“So, that’s going to be the best memory. Regardless of my last time seeing him in Thousand Oaks, it’s gonna be how I started playing this game.”

Kawhi Leonard Used Same Pilot, Helicopter As Kobe Bryant

Jan 29, 2020 9:17 PM

Kawi Leonard confirmed he used the same helicopter and pilot as the one that Kobe Bryant was on when he crashed on Sunday.

“Great guy, super nice,” Leonard said Wednesday of Ara Zobayan. “He was one of the best pilots. That is a guy who you ask for to fly you from city to city. It’s just surreal still.”

Leonard purchased a house in Rancho Santa Fe last year and discussed how to cut down on his commute with Bryant.

Bryant also purchased a penthouse in downtown Los Angeles.

“I talked to him about it before our transition to playing in L.A, just seeing how (he) got back and forth from Newport and he said he was doing it for about 17 years or so,” Leonard said. “Yeah, same pilot, everything, the whole situation, this whole program, the setup, how he was traveling back and forth was the same way I was getting here from San Diego.”

Leonard said he's unsure if he will reduce the amount of time he spends in helicopters.

“The things that you hear, you don’t know what’s real yet,” he said. “I can’t really speak on it. I don’t know. I don’t know yet. It’s a lot of thoughts in my head.”

Kawhi Leonard On First Triple-Double Of Career: 'It's Just A Great Honor'

Jan 25, 2020 12:59 PM

Kawhi Leonard recorded the first triple-double of his career in a 122-117 win over the Miami Heat, finishing the game with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Leonard said he didn't know of his achievement until Tyronn Lue told him in the 4th quarter.

"It's just a great honor. ... I believe going into the fourth Coach [Tyronn] Lue told me 'Congratulations.'" And I didn't know what he was talking about and he said I got my first triple-double so that's when I was aware," said Leonard.

The Clippers were playing without Paul George and Patrick Beverley due to injuries.

Doc Rivers added that the Heat's defense forced Leonard to pass the ball.

"Actually I thought he had one already. Yeah, that's cool. And he had to -- [the Heat] were trapping him. And instead of trying to force it, he just kept taking the traps, moving the ball, getting guys open shots. And the whole key is like Kawhi said in [the locker room], 'I'm going to pass you that ball, but the key was that you guys made the shots.' That led to the end of the game where then he got his isos, and then he started scoring. So it was like he was a boxer and he just kind of took his time until he could throw punches."

Kawhi Leonard Still Advised To Skip Back-To-Backs For 'Injury Management'

Jan 23, 2020 4:24 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers refer to Kawhi Leonard's situation as "injury management" instead of "load management" to get around the ambiguities that come with the latter term, sources tell Jovan Buha and Sam Amick of The Athletic

Sources say the current medical advice mandates Leonard continue to not play in games on back-to-back nights.

Sources also say some teammates have struggled with the preferential treatment Leonard and Paul George have received from the Clippers.
