Jamison: D'Antoni's Communication 'Up And Down' Last Season

Aug 31, 2013 12:57 PM

Antawn Jamison admits Mike D'Antoni was in a tough situation last season, taking the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching job early in the season and adapting his system onto a new team.

Even so, Jamison says the line of communication was never consistent throughout the season.

"Mike was pretty much put in a difficult situation," Jamison said. "There was no training camp where he could get a feel for guys. There was a breakdown of communication when we first got there. And throughout the season it was kind of up and down.

"I don't dislike Mike. I obviously respect him as a coach. In my eyes, one of the best offensive-minded coaches in the league. I just think he was put in a tough situation ... but toward the end of the season you saw him kind of open up, and we started to have a relationship, and I kind of understood where he was coming from."

Jamison still, however, does not understand why Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard were never able to gel on and off the court.

"It was difficult," he said. "I really believed before we got started that those two could co-exist. But it just didn't work out that way. Both guys are unbelievable basketball players, the best we have in the game right now. But for whatever reason we just couldn't get that relationship as far as them communicating and them trusting each other the way you needed them to trust each other in order for us to win a championship. It just didn't happen that way."

Aug 24, 2013 3:30 PM

Jim Buss admitted Dwight Howard let the Los Angeles Lakers know that he did not want to play with Kobe Bryant for multiple years, if the All-Star center elected to re-sign with them.

"Dwight didn't want to play with Kobe for 2-3 more years," Buss said. "I'm going to stand behind Kobe because of his history with the franchise."

Howard also reportedly was adamant he did not want to play for Mike D'Antoni.

Howard signed a four-year deal with the Houston Rockets in free agency.

Jeanie Buss: I Feel Like We Failed Dwight Howard

Aug 23, 2013 4:46 PM

Dwight Howard decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason to sign with the Houston Rockets.

"It's disappointing that Dwight isn't here," said Jeanie Buss. "I feel like we failed him. This is the mother part of me. When you become a Laker, I feel I become your mama. Maybe I get too sentimental for the basketball side of things."

Howard spent just one season with the Lakers, coming back to play just a few months after back surgery.

"When we got Dwight my phone lit up with people wanting to see him play. I told them, 'If you're only going to come to one game, come in January' because I wasn't sure Dwight was going to play until then because of his back. I was so impressed that from Day One, he threw himself out there. He took the risk to play as many games as he could."

Jim Buss Open To Bringing Back Phil Jackson In Official Consulting Role

Aug 23, 2013 7:27 PM

Phil Jackson does not have an official position with the Los Angeles Lakers, but he has made it clear to Jeanie Buss that he would listen to potentially filling any capacity.

Jim Buss understands Jackson is available for the Lakers and says he is open to bringing back the legendary coach.

"We can call him at any time," Jim Buss said. "(GM) Mitch (Kupchak) has sat down with him several times, especially with the Dwight situation. I'd be more than happy to have him on a consultant basis. I don't think we're paying him and I don't know if he has an official title. I have no idea if Jeanie wants to sit down and discuss that. But I have no issues with him coming back or having a role."

Jeanie even believes Jackson would be open to filling a broadcasting role if needed.

"He wants to be supportive of me and the organization," she said. "He has no contractual obligation. He would listen to anything where he might be able to help. If we asked him to fill in on the broadcast because someone was out, I'm sure he'd do it. Just because everyone puts him as a coach doesn't mean that's the only thing he's capable of doing."

Jodie Meeks Trying Not To Worry About Upcoming Free Agency

Aug 20, 2013 12:43 PM

Jodie Meeks will enter a contract year next season with the Los Angeles Lakers, but he is trying to keep the fact out of his mind.

"I try not to think about it," Meeks said of his impending free agency following the final year on his Lakers' deal set to pay him $1.55 million. "Usually when you don’t think about things, good stuff happens, and when you think about it, you put too much pressure on it. Human nature is obviously to think about it, and I’m sure everybody knows I’m in a contract year, but you try not to worry about that kind of stuff."

Meeks was cleared to resume full-contact drills a month ago and should be fully healthy in his contract year.

"I have a year under my belt with Coach D’Antoni’s system so that kind of puts me ahead of the curve to start the season, but at the end of the day, you have to be productive when you get out there," Meeks said. "My main focus is just doing that. Doing what I can when I’m out there, being productive and trying to win games. I think when that stuff happens I won’t have anything to worry about."
